Much better than trying to tweak the network settings in Firefox yourself, just use the fasterfox extension. But before you do that, you should definitely check out The Deer Park build of Firefox.

The Deer Park build and that extension together are awesome. I genuinely noticed a huge speed boost while browsing.

The Deer Park build is an optimised version of firefox that takes better advantage of newer hardware as well as having a few other tweaks (to put it in layman’s terms).

The reason it is able to do so is because firefox is built with backwards compatibility for much older hardware than most people (certainly most people on here) use. So take advantage of your shiny new hardware and get Deer Park

If you want to use all your current bookmarks with the new build, just copy and paste them. I would suggest re-installing all your extensions though. They are very few and far between, but there is the odd extension that doesn’t want to work with Deer Park (although AFAIK anything that works with ff1.5+ should work with Deer Park).

    Happy browsing

    What, none for Opera.

Heres the best one I know of:

    Jekyll & Hyde Toolbar
Allows quick access to a multitude of Opera settings, and a load of user JS scripts. Replaced the standard Address bar with the Hyde bar and an expanding Jekyll bar, uses a custom menu setup. See the page for more info.

    A couple more for FireFox:

Dragdropupload - drag and drop files into form uploads, very handy for gmail uploading, or web based file uploads.

    Fetch Text URL
    - highlight a URL and go there (for non-linked URLs or bogus headers e.g. hxxp:// ), something I missed from using Opera.

Greasemonkey - head to userscripts.org to find extra scripts to extend functionality. The gmail conversation previewer is good.

    Can I suggest:

    Colourful tabs
Cookie Culler - Allows you to set cookies that aren't to be deleted when you clear cookies from Firefox. Means you can keep essential cookies when you clear out unwanted cookies.
FxIF - Enables you to see EXIF data in photos.
Am very surprised no one has mentioned NoScript. Excellent for stopping websites run javascript that you don't want.
OpenBook - Allows for some customisation of the Add Bookmark dialog, including being able to set a keyword for the bookmark there and then.
Stylish - Lets you set CSS styles for websites you visit so you can remove frames and other things that AdblockPlus doesn't.
Update Notifier - Does what it says on the tin. Lets you know about updates to your installed extensions. Can also be used in Thunderbird as well.
