    Exchange

Is there a way to change the time limit to less than 15 minutes for its syncing of emails, we send loads of internal ones as well as external ones so 15 minutes is about 10 minutes too long really.

That 15 minute period for pop3 collection is fixed , but if you are sending internal mails then you wont be sending them via pop

Ok, I've got it sending an receiving via vpop for now so the 3 accounts that are on the exchange server will send/recive between eachother ook but if you send to someone not on exchange it'll take 15 minutes yeah?

    thats the one

once you have everyone on exchange we'll look at getting rid of the nasty pop3 stuff and external mails will get a bit quicker

    Trig,

As Moby-Dick has pointed out you shouldn't be using pop3 for internal mail, Exchange offers other more effience methods of sending and recieving e-mail internally. First off I would have a look at your Exchange system manager to see what protocols your server has running. In System Manager expand 'Servers' and then expand 'Protocols' In here you should see things like smtp / pop / nntp / x400. You can use x400 or smtp (some people may have issues with me mentioning x400) and I check to see if either protocol has been configured - I'd look at http://www.msexchange.org/ for more inspiration.

Let us know how you get on.

the pop3 for 'internal' mail is an interim measure while Trig battles his way through introducing SBS2003 into his network

by internal he means from a non SBS user to an SBS user so the mail is going outside exchange , which isn't too efficient when using the pop3 collection feature of SBS.

it is a temporary measure though

Do new versions of Exchange still have the horrendous memory overheads for POP3? I know older versions do but I don't have experience with the newer ones. If I were a conspiracy theorist I'd say MS deliverately made IMAP/POP3 support suck in order to make them look bad and guide people towards using Outlook as their client, but that's just insane talking

Exchange itself is quite memory hungry as it is and as far as IMAP/POP3 go , they suck enough as mail protocols without any help from MS

While that's undeniably true, implementing them is fairly trivial whereas the Outlook/Exchange protocol is decidedly non-trivial. Yet on Exchange the memory usage with POP3/IMAP is MUCH higher, to the point where it can kill a perfectly working server if you were to switch everyone away from Outlook.

I can't see a logical reason for someone with as many talented programmers as MS has to screw this up so badly unless it's deliberate.

On a side note, I can't wait for the EU to force MS to open the Exchange protocol. The Samba guys have been struggling with it for years so will be all over it like a rash. Maybe we can see POP3/IMAP finally start to die like they should have years ago.

That would be good - I'd like to see some competition to Outlook ( that isn't $&"%*"ing Groupwise or Lotus notes )

Groupwise is pretty cool, especially for clustering. Oracle Collaboration Suite is the daddy though (the cost is enough to make a grown man weep).

I know I shouldnt be using pop3, I know its crap but this place was running it before I started working here, so the general plan is I get it all up and running on the new MS2003 type stuff, learn all that get work to pay for whatever training etc I need then I go get a proper job where I'm being paid more than £18k a year for looking after 40 users and all the associated crap.....

Go wash your mouth out young man !

Groupwise is "nearly" as bad as Notes as a mail client!

I remember some smug GW admin showing me how much he'd made his GW look like outlook. I explained mine did that out of the box as it was outlook

Novel does cluster pretty well in general , but exchange has improved in 2003 for running within a cluster though.

Apologies, I was referring to the server technology rather than the client.
