if your machine is just for home use don`t bother with xp pro you won`t need it .
if your just the type to play games and surf the net and maybe some word proccessing the only diffrence is the price.. its not faster or slower and looks exactly the same. =/
both built on the same core so its just whether you want the extra networking bits

xp pro has go loads of extra wee features well worth the money,
c0w
depends if you need the extra features to be honest, no point paying for the extra features if you don't need them. but *i think* with PRO, if you format your PC a lot, or change your hardware a lot, then PRO doesn't mind as much as Home - but this could be more to do with whether it's oem or retail?Originally posted by Dave_07

obviously MS want you to buy Pro, as they make more money, but have a look here :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp
Pro features:
Advanced networking for multiple PC environments
Internet Information Services (IIS), a Windows XP Professional feature that lets you host and manage personal Web sites
Support for multiple-processor systems
Support for multiple languages

My machines are for home use, but one of them is multi-processor, and that's another thing that XP Home doesn't support. According to a mate, Home doesn't properly support Hyperthreeading either, so later P4 chips will get a performance boost from Pro. Presumably the same applies (will apply) to the new Hyperthreading XP's) too. I'm only going by what my mate found about hyperthreading, though. I'm assuming he's right, but haven't tried it (or looked it up to see if it's true) myself.Originally posted by philly

Another friend had no end of instability problems with Home. He upgraded (bought full retail) XP Pro (and sold the Home package) and the problems went away. I draw no conclusions from this, but mention it in case it is of interest.
there are no stability differences between home & pro, your mate just bodged his home installation.
the differences between home & pro boil down to:
*multiple processor support, including hyperthreading "virtual" processors
*ability to join a network domain
*IIS web server
*remote access via Remote Desktop
some of the things in that winsupersite article are just plain wrong - i have deployed systems running Home with Sysprep, for example. the above are the main differences you should notice. i'd run Home if a) i didn't use remote Desktop a lot and b) i didn't get Pro free from my university
