Since we now have our licenses for windows n stuff at work I've noticed theres a copy of XP64 in there, what else am I going to need, we have office but its just SBS2003, what about apps working on 32/64 or shall I just stick to 32 for now?

Don't forget you need 64bit drivers for all of the components in the system
Yeah I know
I was thinking more along the lines of applications
99% of applications will just work. theres not alot around at the moment that actually benefits from the 64bit, but its nice to have a play. i've been running xp64bit for about 8 months with little trouble.. there is a mild (~1-5%) performance boost for 32 bit games as well..

Thats basically why I was going to look at it, as were all licensed up at work now in the SBS pack we've got the 64bit edition as well...
As with 5lab, I've been running 64bit since it was available as final, and prior to that as a beta, and have had no issues with it. Support for apps is still limited, but if you have a properly oced 64bit app it's got to be worthwhile trying.Originally Posted by [GSV]Trig
For all the time it'll take you to install X64 or dual boot it, I say go for it.
i tryed it on my system liked it but u need atleast 2gb ram it eats it up and there are ways to get most progs working
AMD4400+ X2@2742mhz 2GB 0CZ pc4000 EB
AN8 x32,150gb Raptor's in raid0 ,7900gtx's sli'ed
Tagan u-15 580w Samsung 244t thermaltke tai chi watercooled case
i've got 1 gig and its fine - normally ~800 megs free. only had 512 to start with and that was a little slow.Originally Posted by mattio

Drivers just aren't mature enough yet. Most games (well WoW - what else do you need? ) ran like an absolute dog in 64.
The only reason I'd run xp64 as my main OS would be if I did lots of 3d stuff or media encoding. Even if there's no 64bit specific apps these kinda things benefit from the 64bit OS. Or if I had >4gb ram
Only thing I've come across that's 64bit is stuff like SQLServer2005 64bit. Errr... not a lot else really

actually, normal 32 bit apps get a boost when running on a 64bit os on a 64bit cpu, versus a 32bit os on the same 64bit cpu

It's hit and miss. You can't just say "all 32bit apps run faster".
Things that are memory intensive like the apps I pointed out can see a gain, some apps see a decrease in performance due to overheads. Check out the numerous benchmarks and comparisons on the net if you don't believe me (too lazy to search google myself)
