struggling with (old YDL) Linux on (old mac) ibook

I have got an old version of YDL (yellow dog LINUX) running on an old mac ibook and am having much fun trying to learn a new OS...I am getting the distinct impression that this old version of YDL might not be able to run some of the newer installers for programs such as firefox/mozilla where I get the error "cannot run/execute the binary file" - for both firefox 1.5 and mozilla installer 1.7xx

Opera 8.5x seemed to install (they at least had an install for PowerPC linux, whereas mozilla was for iX86 linux (I was hoping I'd just have to look for "linux" compatible stuff now... )) however Opera doesn't seem to run (not that I get any errors, the spinning hourfglass sits there for a while, then disappears...)

I'm thinking I might need to try a brand spanking new version of PPC linux and take the risk that this old laptop can cope with it?

By the time I transfer my home PC to linux in a few months hopefully this troubleshooting experience will pay off!

    any help greatly appreciated!

ok, the problem is not that your hardware is too old, its that your running the wrong products.

you can't run any linux apps on PPC running linux, you have to run an app for linux-ppc

eg: go to rpmfind.net and you'll find out there linux packages for x86 i586 i686 x86_64 ppc sparc
so for example a pentium 4 could run x86 - i586 and i686 put not x86_64 or ppc because they are built for a different platform even though its still "linux"
    It is Inevitable.....
