Shields up is a load of tosh - it instills a false sence of security in people.
MS have a much better port scan on the ideas.live.com site.

Too true; if I hear about SG's vaunted "nanoprobes" once more, I'm going to have to hurt somebody...
ShieldsUP! Analysis
Dont you have to have been invited to use that site though?Originally Posted by Moby-Dick
I see your point, but shieldsup is still usefull if you cant get into ideas.live.com and are just checking config changes on your firewall have applied/worked. I used it when setting up a draytek router as a firewall in non NAT mode.
I do however hate Steve Gibson. The guy needs his air supply cutting off.

Perhaps the topic title should be changed to read "Another Reason why Steve Gibson should not be allowed."![]()
This has been discussed heavily on The Hardware List i'm on over the past week or something.
As someone pointed out, they are still waiting for t'internet to grind to a hault as Steve predicted all those years go.

I use sheilds up to test certain ports are opened when messin with firewalls, should I shoot myself now...?
You'll have to shoot me too as I do the same thing
added after starting to try the microsoft one and giving up...
...and it works in firefox and I dont have to agree to a contract and I dont have to install anything etc... ^_^ I take it that the microsoft scan does more but if you only want to check what ports are open its just annoying.

there a lots of other ways of test to see if a port is really open or not.
Have a read of the shileds up analysis link in nicomach's post for more detail.
Remeber the MS one is a beta and will actualyl check your machine for port vulnerabililties - its a much more thorough test.
Penetration testing is much more than looking at open ports , but you can always ask somone to check and telnet them. Go for the human element and you'll get a much better test
if you just want a pure port scan , which is porbably more use to you than Gibsons Mumbo Jumbo have a look at these ones.
