    MSN 8.0 taking over HD

I've just noticed I was running a little low on HD space...

Usually this is due to my periodic downloading of random rubbish off the net, however this time, I was fairly sure that I ought to have more space... I did a bit of hunting and found a 1.8GB dr watson log - I only reformatted this computer about 3 months ago... how the logs build up! Then I noticed my MSN temp files were at 8.0GB!

    8.0GB!

so I press delete "sorry the file --B{0BBX}..FLX (or something) cannot be deleted as it is too long"

    8.0GB long?

I can't seem to delete it in safe mode etc - it's not the first time I've seen a stupidly long file but I really don't want to format again - any ideas on how to remove it?

Linux live CD will obliterate it.

ntfs writing isn't really usable right now.

blame MS for keeping the specs secret.

nope, I blame the Linux geeks for not cracking it yet. They've had since NT4 to do it after all = )

if you have a live-cd with a 2.6.15 kernel (and nothing older), then you get the latest bleeding-edge ntfs writing support. this now supports modification of files with altered file size (i.e. you can't create or delete files with linux ntfs write support, you can alter the contents of a file without changing its size on 2.6.14-, or alter the contents full stop on 2.6.15+)

there's also the option of captive ntfs, which uses windows ntfs drives via an emulation layer - pig slow, but does work. i don't think any live cds come with captive though, for licensing reasons

either way, nobody *owes* you anything. reverse-engineering a filesystem is hellishly complex, especially one as obfusticated as NTFS (which has changed fairly substantially in structure from version to version).

lol - I never said anyone owes me anything, except MS who owes me a util to delete stupidly large files that windows refuses to acknowledge - after all I paid for the license for working software! = (

anyway, I'm not trolling I just want a simple way to delete the file - only got a small chunk left to go before I can have a go at removing this file with knoppix. Let's hope it's bleeding edge is bleeding enough = )

ok - knoppix can read the drive but cannot delete the file. I can see a bit more clearly where the issue is, the file is called 'Similarity_Table_2' no extension etc. There's a few other files, but doesn't seem to be much I can do about it!

I'm reporting the problem to MS to see if they actually reply to their beta testers!

if it's full retail windows, then ring microsoft for support. after all, that's what you paid for. if it's oem, then phone the people who built your pc for support. after all, that's what you paid for.

file is in "documents settings" > username > "Local Settings" > "application data" > "microsoft" > "Messenger" > email > "Sharing Meta Data" > "working"

Then there's a load of crud and these hidden database files.

    8.0GB isn't even funny

i suspect the key is in the use of "long", not "large". sounds like the problem is the file name, not the file itself. ntfs is fine with files over 2GiB.

if explorer can't delete a file with a name that long, you could try using cmd.exe, or the recovery console, or even something like cygwin. you don't even need to delete the file - just rename it to "bob.dat", which anything ought to be able to delete without worry
