CD Burning Problem - Nero or CD's?

    Hi,

I got a spindle of 50 CD-R's at tesco last night and have burned 4 of 'em, but whenever I try and burn any of the others, the burn stops at x% (It seems that x% corresponds to xMB) every time and then stops with a 'write error.'

I haven't tried reinstalling Nero, but tried burning to another brand of disc and it worked (Albeit still with a pause on x%)

Is it safe to assume its the discs? I've kept the receipt

and, does the pause on x% indicate any problem with my hardware?

    Cheers,
    David

It would probably help if you gave us some more info. i.e. Drive make/model, disk brand, what kind of data you are burning, how you are burning (on the fly audio CD to CD, or data from the HDD to CD, etc), and have you ever had this problem before with other disks? If the answer to the last one is 'no', then i would assume the disks were are fault or incompatible with your drive.

You should try burning at x1 speed to see if that works. If it does, then gradually increase the speed until you find the highest speed they will burn at.

Also, check to see if there is any firmware updates available for your drive, especially in relation to media incompatibilities.

You could of course try also another program, like deepburner and other free ones which can be found on www.downloads.com.

"and, does the pause on x% indicate any problem with my hardware?"

It depends on a few factors (such as exactly why its happening and what/how you are buring), but unlikely. Is it always at the exact same point? what's the buffer level doing? Something could be causing an interruption to the data. Try disabling as many programs that many be running in the background as you can (in the old days when burner drives first came out i could never burn a CD with my antivirus on). Also, are you burning 'on the fly' (direct disk to disk)? If the source drive and the burner on the same IDE channel then this can cause problems too. But to be honest, buffer underrun protection is so good these days i cant remember when i last make a coaster (but then i always buy decent media, and not cheap tesco branded type rubbish). Again, try dropping the write speed.

The discs that aren't working are Tesco ones, £9.97 for a spindle of 50.
I've burnt a few iso's fine (UBCD, and theOpenCD 3.3) and they're all being burnt from HD to CD. The problem has never occured with other discs, no.

Cheers, i've tried at 1x with the same result.

Its not always at the same percentage - but i've been burning some discs with less data on them than others, so it could well have been at the same amount of Mb's. The buffer level never goes above 80%, and it worked in the same conditions with the CD's I borrowed and they worked - I really should've noted how much I was burning and at what percentage it stopped, but I didn't.oops

The drive in question is a *heads off to device manager to get exact name* BTC BCE4816IM if that helps

    Cheers,
    David

If you can, take the disks back, but i suspect you drive is not heping. If i remember correctly, those BTC drives are cheap and nasty, so i would expect a fair bit of compatibility issues, especially with cheap CD's. If you want to use the very budget end of the CD market, at least invest a few quid in a decent burner.
