right situation - old computer, working but not the best in the world (not this one I'm on)
it has Windows ME on it - I have just recently reformatted and reinstalled it (i told you its old!) so as to have it as a spare/backup type computer... couldn't be bothered to fork out for anout winXp, MS would be robbing me blind if I did.
what sort of upgrades/updates should I get for this ME system - given its just the same as 98 - only crashes more apparently but not yet for me - are there any service packs or similar 'big' updates to it? ...

hmm... I have quite a few apps I know work for windows - would they work on linux? I think I'll just want to keep with windows - everything else I have is - gonna have a network up and running soon too so i don't want to over-complicate things...

download knoppix and give it a try, it runs off a cd so no need to install anything, just set your bios to boot from Cd and have a play

59 critical updates available on the MS site. Although realistically, its probably about 40, as it'll try to update IE5.0, then update IE5.5 etc.
