    Standard (Workstation):
If you get version7, you can use it forever, 1 yr, 10yr, or more, BUT if you want an upgrade to version8 or something in the future, you need to upgrade your license (usually at a reduced cost compared to a new license)
    Subscription:
You always get the most updated version but you need to pay every 12 months to renew the license. In short term it is cheaper, but in long term it is more expensive compared to the standard one (but I'm taking about a couple of years)

When Vista is coming out, they may "upgrade" it to V8 or something like that so they can force you to buy a new license if you want to change from XP to Vista. If you're not going to upgrade your winxp in a couple of years, WS version will be more suitable for you. Vice versa
