    Stop 0x00000077

    Hi everyone,

A bit of background first - rebuilt machine new memory , added second hdd and striped it (Silicon Image 3112 controller),
new gfx card, loaded MCE 2005 - patched to latest. See system spec for more details.

Am getting the following BSOD - only when playing BF2 (so far) though.

    STOP 0x00000077 (0x00000000, 0x00e27020, 0x00000000, 0xac18995c)

I've had a look at Q315266 and I think based on that it seems most likely to be disk - am open to suggestion otherwise though.
I have run memtest for a few hours no errors.
Does anyone know of any problems with Sil 3112 controller / driver?
Really don't want to reload MCE as have to contact MS for re-activation each time so would rather keep raid set if I can.

Thanks in advance for any help / suggestions!

Have you tried disabling the swap file to rule out disk io problems?

I'll give it a go tonight and see how it goes. Will BF be runnable without a swapfile? Anyone tried that?

Can't say I've tried running any games without a swap file, but I would imagine if you've got a lot of RAM ie 2GB then I can't see why it won't work. Did you get a chance to try it last night?

Didn't have much time last night so couldn't test properly.
Turned page file off to clear the file in case it was in any way corrupted and set it to system managed.
Am going to have a play properly tonight.

    Thanks.

Well - it's still doing it. Can anyone shed some light on the minidump I'm getting?

If the problem can be reproduced at will easily enough, I would start by ruling out the memory.
Assuming you have 2x 1Gb DIMMs, take one out at a time and see if the problem still occurs.

Basically the STOP 0x77 is telling you explicitly that Windows failed to retrieve a block of virtual memory from the swap file correctly for whatever reason - typically this is a hardware problem.

If you have another disk handy, I would connect that as a standalone slave and manually specify the entire swap file on that disk - this would rule out (or implicate) the RAID controller.

If isolating the memory sticks and using another disk on a separate IDE port doesn't work, then I would assume a mainboard or BIOS issue - it could be a processor problem but I think it unlikely as you would expect more random results.

Minidumps are also not a lot of use for debugging btw, set the system to produce kernel dumps - though in this case you know the issue is a failed "inpage" operation so the stack trace is not likely to help anyway.

I've run the MS memtest over it for a few hours with no errors so I think I'll try an additional PATA disk for swap file as you suggest.
Should be able to do that Tue pm - fingers crossed I might get some joy this time!

I got a full kernel dump last time but am not sure what to do with it

    Many thanks for the reply.

Are you running the MCE drivers for the motherboard and graphics ?

I'm only asking as I had a similar BSOD issue when using nvidia Windows XP drivers and not the MCE drivers that are available.

Am using the MCE gfx drivers but as far as I know there aren't any MCE specific nForce 2 drivers around.

You did make me think though - I slapped the MCE gfx drivers back over my existing ones.....
...now I am pretty sure I did use the MCE specific ones before but may be as well to uninstall the gfx drivers
and then re-install them again clean.

Which build no. of the nvid gfx drivers are you using succesfully (am on latest myself)?

    Thanks.

Haven't tried that - just downed a copy and will give that a run this pm too.
How long would you recommend running it for?

I would say give it a couple of loops mate. Maybe add a 4-5 concentrated loops of tests 5 and 8 too

Well - ran Memtest86+ for 6 1/2 hours overnight - no errors so recon Ram is fine.
New hdd in and swap file moved to that - no BSODs. Did get a complete freeze of the system though -
Windows totally locked up - no keyboard response etc.
Am going to test a bit more for a few days and see if I get the BSOD at all if not then I guess assume
that it's a problem with the Sil3112 raid.......does that seem like a reasonable assumption?

    Chinny.

You get similar symptoms if you unplug the system drive while Windows is running, so it seems like there is a problem with the disk that Windows is installed on, the driver for the controller, the IDE port to which the system disk is connected, or the controller itself.
Moving the page file to another disk made the symptoms change in a consistent manner, so it more or less rules out memory issues.
