    Slackware

So, I've installed Slackware on a laptop, when it was installing everything went as it should as far as I know, no errors etc, setup the keymap, partitioned the drive etc etc, now when it boots and I log in I type "kdesktop" and get the following error message..

ERROR: KUniqueApplication: Can't determine DISPLAY. Aborting.

So, installing this is as easy as installing windows eh...

    slackware? no, it isn't.

slackware is the second oldest linux distro. it hasn't gotten any easier in 12 years.

anyone recommending slackware to you was having a laugh.

if you wanted something simple, then you would have had several recommendations for fedora, suse, mandrake or ubuntu.

kdesktop is kde's desktop app (obvious as that sounds) - it provides desktop icons and wallpaper, but you need to have the GUI subsystem (X11) loaded first. when you're in X, a variable called $DISPLAY gets set. ":0" is the first display on a computer, ":1" is the second one, etc. if $DISPLAY isn't set, then it implies X11 isn't running.

try running "startx" - if slackware isn't stupid, that should load up a default graphical subsystem, which ought to be KDE. if slack *is* stupid, you may need to write "startkde" into the file ~/.xinitrc first.

either way, most simple distributions, by default, have a graphical login which takes you straight to a desktop

where the feck did I get the idea of slackware from then?
I'm on the laptop now so I'm guessing all's relatively well otherwise I wouldnt be able to get this far, using Konqueror for browsing which I'm guessing has a built in spellchecker as some of this has gone red...

Where do I edit the config so I can add a user and edit the startup so that it auto gui's on boot....

Right we now have Firefox installed, I'm guessing theres no registry or copying of files to other locations and u can just drop the firefox directory to wherever the apps are stored...

for slackware? i'm not sure. you can add a user by running "adduser" in a konsole window - there should be a clicky way to do it, but buggered if i know how

as for getting a GUI on boot, open the file /etc/inittab in a text editor. change the line "id:3:initdefault:" and make it say "id:4:initdefault:" instead. this will only work if you have one of the following programs installed: gdm, kdm or xdm

drivers, usually, are included as part of the kernel. if memory serves, slackware uses the obsolete 2.4.x-series kernel rather than 2.6.x - meaning a bunch of stuff that's included in 2.6 (like bluetooth drivers) needs to be obtained and compiled separately.

the tool to load a driver is modprobe.

    for sound, try "modprobe i810_audio".

for wifi, it's hard to be sure (since all the different wifi chips have different levels of support. 802.11b is generally better supported than 802.11g) the older cards my housemates all used could be cummoned with "modprobe orinoco"

for bluetooth, you probably want "modprobe hci_usb"

modem drivers are almost universally software modems (remember the old winmodem era, where everyone wanted a diamond supraexpress? t'is cos those were hardware, not driver-based). there's a fairly generic driver called linuxant which can deal with software modems, but they charge you cash for a key to unlock 56k speeds

in general, to make "modprobe somedriver" happen at boot, add "somedriver" to the end of /etc/modules

easy distributions handle hardware detection etc automatically

its an AMD based laptop, the Knoppix CD autodetects it up as an ALi chipset, I tihnk it'll probably be easier to grab a different distro to this one if its outdated, I aint getting into compiling my own stuff, might split the drive as well and have XP on it for the bint, she'll crap herself on a unix box

Knoppix is probably as good as any - the advantage is that you can try it from the CD initially to make sure there are no nasty surprises lurking in the background, then do a hard drive install.

Knoppix CD is what got me going on this idea, can use it on an older spec laptop without the overheads of XP...

Grabbing the DVD Fedora as we speak.
