    Install software from AD

I there I have a domain on a windows 2000 server. It is managed using active directory. I am trying to install a software using AD to some of my machine on the network. It all seems straightforward enough except that it doesn't install on the local machine.

Here is what I have been doing:
I have created a share available to read for everyone.
I have copied the msi package into it and all relevant files
I went into AD, created a new organisational unit and move the machine I wanted the software installed on into it.
    I created a GPO
Under Computer Configuration > software setting > software installation, I have setup a new package using the relative path to the share. Click OK and staff.
Deployement State is "assigned" Auto instal is "Yes" and upgrade type is "required"

It is my understanding that the next time I restart the machine they should automatically install the msi. The reason for this post is it doesn't!

I know I am not as good as I should be with this things, but you guys are so good I am hoping you will be kind enough to let me know if I missed something...

    Thanks again for your help,

    Emmanuel

You haven't mentioned linking the GPO to the OU, have you done that?

If your using the Group Policy Management snap-in then run the results wizard and see if it tells you why the policy is not applied. If not I suggest installing it - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Also I found that some time the machine requires 1 reboot to get the policy and another to actually install the software.

And if all else fails turn on logging, it's possible it's trying to apply the policy but failing with the MSI or something.

I guess it is linked as I have done a right click on the OU, and created the policy from property box of the specified OU. Is this the right thing to do? Is there an other way to create a GPO?

I am trying to see how this Group Policy Management snap-in works, I have downloaded it and I am trying to link it to the domain, but it tells me that it cannot connect to it?!?!

I have now restarted the machine several times and there is no difference except that the machine seems to take longer to login than usual, maybe it is just me!

    Still trying!

Quoted For Truth (i.e. "What he said").

If I remember right there's an option to create and link a GPO so you may be correct. The properties for the GPO should show what OUs it's linked to though.

SMS is a microsoft product that really does give you a much better level of control over software distribution than using gp's

If you dont have the budget for SMS , then scripted installs are still better imo
