    the joys of roaming profiles....

    Hi,

This is mainly directed at people who have experience of admining Win2k3 Server Domains, but if others have an idea then any help much appreciated. However please don't post if you haven't any experience in such matters.

The problem is with an RM managed network (yes, I'm in education), using the Community Connect Software. This is basically RMs way of managing the network, using their own design of apps etc. The only problem is that of moving away from such a system, as the main problem we have with this the roaming profiles, as even over a network with a gigabit backbone, it is incredibly slow.

This leads to the question is it possible to disable roaming profiles, and how would we do it? Several options would be good, as RM is a funny system.

    Many Thanks,

    Dave

I have no experanince with Community Connect Software, but I do look after just of 130 2003 DC's (and a few 2003 R2 server now :-D)

To disable the roaming profiles you could just remove the profile parth from the user account in AD. This would disable the profiles so they would just use the local profiles. then I guess you would want to move to users profile to there home drive so they can access it.

Do your users not need to stored favories and desktop short cuts and things like that?

The desktop items isnt really applicable, as we could include those on the default profile, and no standard user is able to store stuff on the desktop (Admins can, but usually don't). Favourites is not really an issue, as very few people I have seen use them. The main problem is with the apps, if we join a standard pc with xp installed to join the domain, we get the short cuts for every software package available, but they are not installed.

The removal of the profile path might work, though I have a feeling that RM might interfear with that approach.

    Keep the suggestions flowing guys

PS Trig, thanks for the sympathy, it indeed has got worse

You could try a mandatory roaming profiles, then users would not be able to make changes etc so the profile would be very small and might load quickly?

Though I have worked with Win 2k3, I have absolutely no idea how I would do that, Thats what we are trying to achieve, but we also need to get it so it doesn't inherit all of the icons (ie, that it only has the icons for the installed software) as it does currently if not using the RM installer.

to make a profile mandatory you have you rename the ntuser.dat file to ntuser.man

any changes to the profile are no longer saved in logoff.

The problem I have is that I know very little about RM connect

you could unshare what ever the share that profiles are held on I suppose

good for something called flex profiles , they are like mandatory ones that also have user specific options.

I wish I was in the same boat - RM CC3 (having worked with it for just over a year and a half) is great at doing what they want you to do with it, but is a nightmare if you want to change something.

I'll have a look into the different profiles, though its the distribution of apps alongside the current system that could be the next hurdle.
