As title! If I have more than a view files in the My Videos folder XP totally locks up as it tries to make thumbnail previews. Sometimes it even crashes and BSOD's. I guess disabling the previews would stop this?
Please help!

Ermm if it crashes theres something wrong with your system..... mabbe we can get it working. Whats ya spec, anti-viri'd? firewalled? Does it crash doing anything else, whats the BSOD message?

Hmm... I didn't think that would be the case, but today I just left it playing some music and got an IRQ Less Not Equal BSODOriginally Posted by Fidley
starting to think there's something actually wrong with the PC now (as well as the video previewing problem). Dawn Of War kept crashing to the desktop as well.
HTPC spec is in my sig, running the latest AVG, no firewall. When it used to crash before I didn't get an error message, just a blue screen with loads of evenly space grey dots (garbled error message I guess!).
I'll run a memtest when I get back tonight and see what happens... could possibly be overheating because I have all the fans set to low and the HTPC case is in a wooden cabinet (but there is space for exhaust at the back).

Setup up some temp monitoring software if you think it might be over heating. Memtest can't hurt tho! If memtest/temps seem ok try a 32M super_pi... google it if you don't already have it.

Have you installed a monster codec pack? if so, go to jail, go directly to jail, do not pass go and do not collect £200.
Usually these problems are caused by a mixed up codec Hell, usually fixable by removing the offending codecs.
Fidley, yeah I'll have deal with it on the weekend probably, tired now I just wanna game
GDVS, lol yeah I have K-Lite Mega Codec pack... but the same version works perfectly on my main x64 machine so is it likely to be that...?

That's precisely what the problem was last time I ran into this issue, same codec pack and all.Originally Posted by Sumanji

I'll also join the club of "fubarring windows MCE with the uber codec pack" installers.
As such, I've now learnt from this and use mainly the nvidia dvd/purevideo decoder.
Currently I have Xvid and nVidia PureVideo installed, no other video codecs. I did some major experimentation with H264 and decided it's not worth the hassle at the moment so those two cover pretty much all my needs. OGG and AAC for audio complete my additional codec list.
I'd recommend PowerDVD over PureVideo for an ATI card though.
Hmmm, don't know to be honest. I do know Xvid and Divx usually play nicely alongside one another though so if I ever come across a Divxfile I can't play I'll just install the latest Divx codec.Originally Posted by Sumanji
1.1 from Koepi. What version of XviD are you using?
So I uninstalled the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and tried using the most basic version they have. I can now go into My Videos without the system hanging/crashing, but about 5 mins into playing a video file the system will totally crash
Now I'm gonna try installing individual codecsI've got Koepi's XviD 1.1.0, OGG Vorbis 0.71.0946... all I need is AAC now. What version are you using GDVS?

CoreAAC 1.0b9 from RareWares.
As well as codecs I've found a fubared Haali media splitter install can play merry bloody hell with things so if you have that installed then remove that too.

Ok I pinned the problem down to... XviD! Kept getting lockups even when using XviD on it's own. I installed DivX 6.1 codec only and set it to decode XviD and MPEG4 and it's working fine (no lockups or anything yet!). So it seems XviD is the problem for me?! Strange...
