    Question RE: XP Media edition

Is it possible for Windows XP Media Edition to run IIS, MSSQL2005, ASP.NET2 for web development with visual studio 2005? How much RAM would you reccomend to run these apps. Reason being thinking of buying a laptop but it only comes with this version on Windows and dont know weather i will need to upgrade to XP PRO. cheers

MCE is basically XP Pro with the MCE apps added of it.
Main difference from XP Pro is MS won't let you join MCE to a domain.
IIS is included and you can run SQL and .net framework 2 etc.

Can I connect a new PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 to a work network or domain?
While you can access network resources on a work network or a domain, you cannot join a Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 PC to the domain. PCs running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 are designed specifically for home use. Windows XP Professional features, specifically Domain Join and Cached Credentials (Credentials Manager for logons) are not included. As a result, you will be prompted for your logon user name and password to access network resources after you reboot or log back on to the PC. In addition, file shares or network resources that are set to require a domain-joined PC for access will not be available. Remote Desktop and Encrypting File System support are still included.
......that said it can apparently be done with a bit of tinkering

chinny, you don't need to tinker. I've just built 5 and added them to a domain with no issues. Your PC just has to have a network card installed that is supported out of the box by XP - personally, I like a nice old 3Com Etherlink XL - and it helps if your network is using DHCP. You just add the machine to the domain in the normal way during the install - you can pull the network card later after the install, assuming your machine has another NIC that you wish to use, say an onboard adapter, as in my case (4 Shuttle ST20G5s and an SN95).

One item to note; fast user switching will be disabled and you will therefore NOT be able to use Media Centre Extenders.

As I understood it you couldn't join a domain as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887212/EN-US/

I knew it was possible although I haven't tried myself. Looks like a Linksys extender should work -
http://www.tss2000.nl/vbforum/showthread.php?t=50 - not sure if it works or not. I've never tried myself as no domain at home.
