    re-encoding tv recordings

I need to compress my tv recordings as they are taking 80gb+ where it could be half that.

Currently all are mpeg2 at 61.76mb/min just for video (according to ATI MMC).

Im going to set up a new profiile in MMC so future stuff doesnt need re-encoding.

Using mpeg4 what bitrate should I use to keep good quality? and same for audio? it doesnt give any option for audio codec so ill leave it at 224kbit/s

For the stuff already recorded what program would be best to reencode it? I used to use vdub for similar stuff except im using mpg not avi so it wont work.

Im going to do all the reencoding on my spare pc which is off most of the time... I expect it will take 10000's of hours to finnish as its only a 2.2 athlon....

also the mpg's are split into 700mb files (default option of mmc) so i need to recombine them.. and cut out adverts.. while keeping audio sync'ed

To read in the MPWG-2 you could use VirtualDub mod. I would recomend using Xvid and give it a quality setting. For converting DVDs to avi's i use AutoGK, bt i don't know if this would work for plain MPEG-2 files. might be worth giving it a go though.
