    Windows XP 64 or not?

Having only recently switched over to a 64bit processor, I was woundering if it might be worth the effort to move over to windows xp 64. What what I can gather, there still seems to be lots of problems with drivers for this platform.

What are ppls expirence with this os then

As a basic OS, it's OK, although you have to remember it's technically a 64-bit version of Windows 2003 Server, rather than a straight port of the XP code. You may therefore find that some 32-bits refuse to install, as they are looking for XP, not Server 2003.

Driver support for a lot of things is still poor in places, even from companies like Logitech (don't even think about using one of their webcams, for example).

    Hope this helps,
    Stephen

If you require a 64-bit OS for specialised applications and specialised software go ahead, but I too would not really recommend it for desktop/home use as theres still very 'limited' driver support as Jez has pointed out.

hmm i've run it for over a year - there are some driver issues but i'd say give it a go if you need a re-install anyways, its a smight quicker than 32bit, and i'd say a bit more stable too..

I love it - but then I am more interested in having an interesting 'project' than having a functional machine that is guaranteed to work with all hardware...

The biggest issue is just that most manufacturers refuse to acknowledge that x64 even exists - they just say that their product requires "Windows XP" and neglect to mention that it only works on the 32-bit version.

If you can put up with that (and already have 32-bit XP that you can revert to if you don't like x64) then why not?

I bought x64 last September, preempting a flatten & reinstall of my system (Athlon 64) at some point.

A couple of months ago I made the switch from 32-bit and while I've had hardly any trouble, I'd say that if you have a 32-bit version of XP, there's no point upgrading... although my PC does run twice as fast now*

Not entirely sure when Vista's meant to be on general release, but if you're looking for a worthwhile upgrade to last for some time, I'd say wait for that.

I just checked the Logitech website, and found some Windows XP 64bit drivers for lots of stuff. Looks like webcams, mice, keyboards, joysticks, etc. are included.

They do have this note: "Note: Windows XP Professional x64 does not have support for game port controllers." And they list some kind of strangeness with the force-feedback function, but they seem to get it to work with their software.

If you can find 64 bit drivers for a Quickcam 4000, you are doing better than me. I know about the keyboard and mouse drivers, as I use those for my Logitech G15 keyboard.

    Cheers,

Thanks for all the comments to my original question.

So I decided to install W64 and now sincerly wish I had heeded the advise of others - what a waste of time and effort that turned out to be!

Even after installing all of the nvidia and ABIT 64 drivers. x64 still failed to work correctly so after much time and effort trying to get it to work I just gave up and wiped the whole thing off!

I think I'll wait until Vista is firmly settled in before I try for another version of windws!

A few months ago I would have said stay clear, but I installed it once again at the weekend, and things seem alot better now, so at the moment it is staying.

Now I'm confused. Cmot says he tried x64 this week, and it's a no. While Capt_Doufos says he tried x64 a few months ago and it was a no, and now this past weekend it's a go. Can either of you fill-in the pieces of that? What kind of troubles did you have with x64?

Today there is a report that Window XP 32-bit can address only 3G of memory, thereby wasting the remaining one-gigabyte of your 4G memory.

If true, then I am surprised it wasn't discovered until now. So something about the report doesn't make sense.
