    Hidden Virus...?

I've got Mcafee Security Centre, which has:

    virusscan software
    personal firewall
    etc

I've done a full virus scan, and done a full Windows Defender scan, it's not coming up with anything.

The strange thing is that the Dell built in support keeps telling me my Internet Explorer security settings are too low - they are all set to the lowest setting, and then when I set them back to default, a while later they'll go back to the lowest settings again...

Another odd thing happens is that a MS Internet Explorer box appears saying "The current web page is trying to open a site on the internet - do you want to allow this?"

This all started after Mcafee popped up saying "found virus" to which I said "delete", but it doesn't seem to have gone away!

    Any ideas?

I don't normally use IE, and wasn't using IE when it said it was infected, but it said the infected file was in the IE cache area... which I've now deleted...

Will try Stinger and see if that finds anything...

    Ta

    Josh

PS - Running XP Home on a 1 or 2 day old laptop.

Might be worth checking it over with F-Secure Blacklight, make sure you haven't been rooted.

spybot found 6 different spyware things. :/ I wonder whether there's any more though that might need a specific program to find them... I mean, if MS antispyware/defender and Mcafee can't find them... somehow I've ended up with "SpywareQuake 2.0" on my computer !! Plus some other virus... Mcafee is finding them... (FakeAlert-B) - it's put a dodgy icon in my taskbar telling me I have a virus, and that I need to go to the net to download more stuff...

A reboot / spybot scan plus Mcafee scan seems to have got rid of everything now. Hooray for Spybot for finding the source of the problem!

if its a legal copy of mcafee, ring them imediately. If you don't mind giving them an image of your HDD, they might be intrested.

I would do a clean format, would take less time than removing it and then you cant be sure, esp if it involves any kind of rootkit type virus.

Windows XP System Restore keeps trying to bring the virus back Do I turn this off, and then it'll delete the system restore stuff?

(never really bothered with system restore previously...)
