I do drivers first, windows updates, then applications (starting with security tools).

    Personally I go

    1) Windows Install
    2) SP2
    3) Chipset Driver
    4) Network Card Driver
    5) Windows updates
6)Then I one by one turn on each hardware component, ie sound card etc and install the drivers for them one at a time, rebooting between each one.
    7) Anti Virus
    8) Other "required apps"
    9) Msconfig to get rid of any bloatware that might have installed with my hardware
    10) Bootvis to trace and optimize

Job done. Reason I leave antivirus till quite late? Before I reformat I sit there and Dl latest versions of drivers and common apps, make a disk, that is scanned at least twice.

Only reason I end up formating is im a desktop horder and after a few months it gets ugly.
