Howard, You are being cold hearted. Your post is in the wrong place as well, if it needs to be moved a mod can do it, now be a bit nicer to people please...

    Forgot to mention XPize.

    http://xpero.msfn.org/?page=downloads

Its a great program that skins resource files such as the add new hardware wizard, which the graphics haven't really been updated in for years.... just don't let it change your startup screen logo

Google for the UXTheme patcher from Neowin, you should find two links, one doesn't work, the other does (I think the second works), download and run, it will require a reboot.

Then search for "XP Styles" or "XP VisualStyles" on sites like Customize.org or Deviantart.com

You then extract these into the Windows\Resources\Themes\ folder, take a look at the text files included in the zip with one of the themes.

This method takes no more resources than the standard windows theme as it uses the built in skinning section of Windows. (sorry I can't go into more detail but I've gotta go)

I use Winblinds 5.0, isnt alot to pay if you're justing skinning the GUI.. But the whole package with that silly DesktopX thingy is just a total waste of money in my opinion..

Winblinds works for me, might work for other too.. havent used CrystalXP, but Winblinds is by far better than StyleXP..
    Me want Ultrabook

binary patching can generally considered to be both screwing and replacing critical system files

I think what he means to say is the patching is quite 'inteligent' that is, it checks the resource part of the PE (dll/exe), then patches just the image, i belive it actually checks the bitmap to be what its expecting first. This is about as safe as patching can get.
