    Firefox Passwords?

I'm trying to recover a saved password in Firefox... when I visit the website the username appears and the password appears as asterisks, and I can click the login to login... however the "View Saved Passwords" dialog in Options is empty... I've been told the passwords are stored in a file somwhere, anyone know how to access them?

    Thanks in advance

Have a look through your Firefox directory, open everything in notepad, might find something...

and check the cookie file for the site mate

abit more info would be helpful, eg version of firefox that you are currently using?

and also the site, if the site is a banking site for instance, then you wont find the password because those types of sites dont allow you to save passwords for security.

    regards

Within the 'View Saved Passwords' Dialogue box that appears there is a button above the 'CLOSE' button, that says 'SHOW PASSWORDS', it then asks whether you are sure, and if the password and username are infact saved by Firefox, they will then be displayed.

Hope this helps, although maybe you are after something else?

The site is xuqa.com and the password is definitely saved cos I can just click on Login without having to type anything

The 'View Saved Passwords' dialog box is completely empty and the 'Show Passwords' button is grayed out. The password is definitely saved though

Aaah ..Do you have any toolbars installed?!.. Such as Google Toolbar, Yahoo etc..etc.. As this also often saves passwords and forms so it will automatically fill them in.

If you do have a toolbar, it would be worth looking at the options for that.

Maybe you saved it on a different build of Firefox and you have a duplicate install or something?.

I'm not exactly *sure* where they are stored, however, whenever I format I backup this dir:
    C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
As it stores all my passwords, bookmarks, etc (just have to rename the folder to the new name given).

So it will be somewhere in there.

Edit: Found it, in the folder I gave above, it is called 'signons.txt' it is encrypted though. - If you have the file and it is full of passwords and such, I'm guessing you should just be able to put that in the working directory (or on another computer) and it should work.

signons.txt only contains 3 characters... I'd already found that file actually but it doesn't seem to contain anything useful

That's strange, well the only thing I can think of is something 3rd party is storing it - as firefox is definitely not.

Any programs at all that may be doing this? It could be cookies though, although that would just keep you signed in rather than fill a form in usually.
