you can't get it to work in windows, or linux
sounds like the cards got a problem, not the OS
It is Inevitable.....
The thing is, it is working, but only to a certain extent. I'm using it right now but as I said I can't get the res or colours used to go above a certain amount. I can't believe that this would be the 3rd card not to work on my machine, unless the problem is with my motherboard...Originally Posted by ikonia
Anyway, regarding the Linux drivers, I found this so I can't use them unless I downgrade to Kernel 2.4, and I don't have a clue how to do that, and if I should do it.
you can't really downgrade the kernel to a 2.4 kernel without installing an older distro in your current ones place.
I'd buy a new card, doesn't work in windows, doesn't work on a linux platform. Time to open the wallet.

If I was able to do that I wouldn't be borrowing such an old card from a friend. I'm not worried about 3D performance at the moment, I just wanna get a reasonable display in Windows or even Linux so I can access websites without have 4 lines of text displayed and have to scroll left and right to read things.Originally Posted by ikonia
Oh well, I suppose I'll just be computer-less for another month till I can afford to send off my 6800GT or by a cheap card to get me going.
You can install the latest 2.4 kernel by (as root):
apt-get install kernel-image-2.4-arch
Swapping arch for whatever architecture you're on (i386, i686, k7 - i386 is probably a safe bet). This comes with no guarantees - things might break if you back to an old 2.4 kernel, and it may not even boot if you have things like udev - I have no idea. Having said that, the 2.6 kernel you have should still work fine afterwards, so there should be no permanent damage (assuming no conflicts that forces you to remove your 2.6 kernel or various other bits... if that happens, you're probably better off leaving it with a 2.6 kernel)
If the vesa driver doesn't work, then I'm not sure anything else will. You could try editing x.org manually if you fancy it.
Mike.
P.S. If anything goes pear shaped, don't blame me!
"Well, there was your Uncle Tiberius who died wrapped in cabbage leaves but we assumed that was a freak accident."
Don't worry, I think I have more problems than a dead graphics card. My main hard drive is now playing up and my second hard drive has unrecoverable errors on it (according to Seagate's SeaTools) so that's being RMA'd. I think my main drive will need to be RMA'd too.
Also, I managed to get Win 2k installed on a small (but supposedly OK) partition on my main drive and although it ran at 800x600 it was limited to 16 colours and the drivers wouldn't install. Also, every now and then the USB and network ports of my motherboard would freeze meaning I could only use my PS/2 keyboard which was still plugged in from the install and I couldn't continue doing anything on the net. TBH I think my mobo is borked, it's killed 2 graphics card already and now it looks like it's taken 2 hard drives with it. :'(
