    Question Mp3 Converter Program sugguestions

At the moment I have quite a few large sized music files (Mp3 format at 320kbps) and I want to reduce this to something smaller (so I can fit more on the 128MB mp3 player I just bought to replace my hiMD) perhaps around the 96kbps mark...

To do so at the moment I use Nero's audio file editor (wave editor) to load the file then save at the correct specifications. But instead of doing it manually for the music I have, is there a program that can work on a batch of them automatically.

I went with Switch and its pretty good and it also copied accross the ID3 tags (saves me hours of doing so) - only problem I have now is finding a good bit rate for it to convert to:

My old hiMD (using ATRAC) used 132kbps.
With switch I can get the following sizes for a 3.43 minute song.

File Size (MB) >>> Bit rate = approx number of songs on a 128MB MP3 player
    3.40MB >>> 128kbps = 37 songs *
    2.97MB >>> 112kbps = 43 songs
    2.55MB >>> 96kbps = 50 songs *
    1.70MB >>> 64kbps = 75 songs *
    0.65MB >>> 24kbps = 197 songs

    * = rates preffered by internet radio stations.

    Now, which should I use?

It's all about how good (or bad) you want it to sound. Try the different bitrates on a couple of tracks and see what is acceptable to you. For me, anything under 128 sounds pants. Even 192 on some tracks is ropey depending on what kind of music it is. (lots of dynamic range doesn't compress well, The Flaming Lips stuff is a good example)

Sounds like I need my ears testing.... (my eyes are due for checkup too) as 96 kbps is usually pretty good for me.

    Will test bit rates later...

I actually used that to convert a file to wav format so that outlook would accept it as a reminder tone (for my daily alarms) but there's a 3 minutes limit on whatever you convert! unless of course you pay and buy the full retail copy.

Any transcoding will degrade quality 320kbps mp3 -> 192 will sound worse than re-encoding uncompressed content (such as audio CDs)

Also have you considered transcoding to a different format? Most sound better at the same bitrate than mp3, so if your objective is space, then it makes sense to choose the best format your player will support.

For example, my phone will play ogg vorbis, I use the flac2ogg script (sourceforge) to do the transcoding. As I am usually listening in noisy environments 128kbps is plently.

A phone that will play Ogg files? which one is that?

I use Foobar2000 for all my conversions (As stated above) will happily convert by 12,000 tracks to MP3, Ogg and MP4. I think there is a plugin for WMA encoding so i'll need to get that installed at some point.

There is a GPL (free) ogg player that you can install on most Symbian devices, Including all Nokia smartphones. As these phones also take memory cards, and most have stero sound, they make good music players.

if your just using in-ear headphone 96kbs will sound fine. Its no worse quality than listening to FM radio.

depends on the person. I can easily hear the difference, even on my K750 with ear buds quite easily. Others can't
