I have no idea how to do this, I assume it would rely on your mother board letting you boot from the usb device.

How you thought about using VM Ware server? It's free at the moment and you can run different os without leaving windows.

I run a 2003 server and an XP pro client. It also supports 95 and 98 and loads of others. It good beacuse you don't have to leave windows or dual boot just flick between OS's

You need a far bit of RAM for it to run well though, your 1GB will be fine though.

What about a "live CD" like BartsPE Builder (its a **free version of windows PE) boots from CD into a windows environment much the same as the many linux live cd distros (Knoppix, DSL etc) except its easier for non-linux friendly users..

    www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

ahh.. opps you want to run 98se.. (BartPE is only for 2k/XP/2k3) suppose you need to have USB boot support...

    Running 95/98 from CD

Better than a USB key eh? apart from its not writable...

TBH like Mark mentioned above a virtual pc would be the better option

As long as your PC can see a memory key as a hard drive (use the HP tools to format the usb key first) you should be able to boot off it. You could use 98Lite to slim down a copy of of the OS thus making it run fast enough to warrant doing this. As advised above this will probably be very slow (you would really want the fastest USB key you can find) and you may run into driver issues within the OS as it doesn't support USB properly for a lot of devices...
