    Backup software

I'm fed up with the quirks of MS Backup; had to retrieve a file from a 4gb backup yesterday and it was an extremely painful process.

So, what would be great is almost like partition image software (like Drive Image) that will backup the whole partition. Needs to be able to retrieve selected files from said backup, or restore backup in its entirity. Running in DOS mode for a complete restore would be a bonus.

Must run on Windows 2000 Server.

    Thanks
    Simon

Norton Ghost? I know it has a program so you can delve into the backup and extract certain files, not sure about doing it in dos mode though.

Norton Ghost can restore the backup / make them ect. in DOS without a problem, although i dont know about extracting individual files in DOS ive never tried. It would make sence that it could be done though (im not saying it can though ! )

Yeah Agent I knew you could do backups etc in dos, just wondering about delving into the compressed backup file in dos, could get messy very quickly with all those files. You can definately do it in windows though.

VERITAS Backup Exec seems to be doing the job very nicely, although a little pricey.

Although its expensive Veritas Backup Exec kicks ass mate.

Its our backup software of choice at work and I've never had a problem with it. The software is stacked with features and makes backing up single and even multiple servers really easy.

Plus should you have any problems I've always found the Veritas knowledge base has answers to the majority of problems.

I'd go for Powerquest products, but what you really want (Systemback) is only available via OEM lisencing from people suck as www.myboris.com

You have to be careful with some of the powerquest products - their desktop products don't work with server versions. Real shame as Driveimage 7 looks fab with hot imagining.

Ghost explorer lets you examine the image and extract files, don't know if its do-able in DOS though.

Acronis True Image 6 can do the job m8. It's really easy to setup and use. You can map an image file in windows explorer, assign a drive letter and extract particular files aswell. It's the best backup software I have used to date.

the distinction is between DI7 V2I files, and DI2002 PQI files. i'm waiting for EasyRestore 6, which will hopefully support the former (as ATM i'm having to resort to the latter)
