That's why he's asking! If he knew all about it, he'd have no reason to ask!

Its never as easy as you think - I'd say the best way would be to build up a portfolio of sites before you start to charge people for it.

Be honest and upfront about your abilities and limitations, and set your clients expectations so that no-one gets any nasty suprises.

We know it wont be easy, we have been if we are serious we can apply for a business grant of £2,000 from Connexions (We are under 19) Which we do not have to pay back!

This would pay for the business i believe, however I'm unsure what to budget for and what is needed to done to set up trading!,

    Thanks in advance,

The application for a business grant will no doubt require a business plan and that's where you should start e.g.

    - What's your target market
    - What skills do you have
    - What volume of customers can you realistically handle
    - What income would you need just to break even.

and a raft of other questions. The tone of your post (in my opinion) indicates that you've seen this wonderful free money for setting up a business and then thought it would be easy to create a web design company. Having set a successful one up around 5-6 years ago I can assure you that £2000 is not going to even remotely cover the first year's costs for bandwidth and hardware.

I suggest you think long and hard about whether this is something you want to get involved in and therefore what you are trying to achieve. If you don't set some realistic goals then the venture will fail and my hard-earned tax payments will have funded another waste of time.

On top of that, there are many many web-design companies around now. Go look on the internet and i'll bet all those sites which give you tutorials also build websites for people. You'd have to stand out from the crowd that's for sure. A different approach and with that business grant you could get the necessary software to do so.

I believe that most small web design companies are having problems establishing themselves nowadays. It is very importnat to think about all the issues that surroud the setting up of such a business.

Got a friend in the business and after more than a year of work he hasn't earn much from web designing. He is unable to hire someone to help him although he receives quite a large amount of work... Surelly business will pick up very soon, since he has a good portfolio now.

Good luck with your venture jcb33

How curious. My company wrote the Connexions Essex site:

    Small world.

It was the student / company conjunction that i was involved in. We all went to a course for a week in the summer holidays and helped input with the design / basic graphics, templates ect... at the end of it we got a big chessy disco for the opening of the site, with some celebs (cant remember who though :\)
I think the company that we did it with was called TWDA ? Ring any bells ?. It was something along those lines anyway, ill find out exactly if you want

It was pretty cool, the person we had was also a right laugh. It was at Holy "something" (maybe green ?) school, in Wasall.

I also had my pic in the paper for it (ill try and find it out and scan it in, even though the pic is totally embarrassing. Ill probably PM you instead actually ). and *apparently* its used in a local colleges prospectus - which is strange as i have nothing to do with that college. I need to follow that one up (maybe the paper sold the pics on ?)

I was doing the one in the black country : http://www.connexions-bc.co.uk/
Most of the Flash and design was already done, and we just did the basic finishing touches over the week (i could have done them in 5 Min's flat, but it was more of a learning exercise for some of the students)
I think i annoyed the teacher at some points though, as i was totaly changing sections that he had done and rabbiting on about putting some sort of CMS in there - but he was having non of it

    Was great fun though

I was thinking of what you are planning of doing, but when I realised my sites were a pile of crap I sort of said, no I wont.

Also I have no money and student Overdrafts, etc.

    But what'd I'd do is
    1. Get a Dictionary.
Start to try and type with correct spellings and it WILL show in your work.

    2. Get either small companies from the area, maybe your freind has a need for a site and they own a window cleaning company?
Create a personal site, just as many sites you can that you can add to a portfolio.

    3. While doing step 2 design a business plan (I have a great word document that tells people how to write a business plan, its quite large and daunting. But dont be swayed by its size, just read through each little bit and it will show you what to put in the business plan) email me: mr_roll@fya-lan.co.uk for the document
