    Free Java

Right then, about time this was all cleared up. Can anybody explain to me all the different varieties of free Java implementations? So far, I've got:

GCJ - compiles to normal Java code and native machine code (so no need for a JVM if you compile your application this way?)
GIJ - runs the normal Java bytecode (JVM)
    Kaffe - also a JVM
Jikes - compiles to Java bytecode

Was I close? Are there any real merits of using one over the other? Any other implementations I should be aware of?

    Thanks

    Mike.
