Can I use my copy of Win XP on my new machine if I sell my old one? It is a OEM copy but it did not come with my pc.

should be able to, might have to ring microsoft support and yell at them though
Would it be better to be nice and polite rather than yell![]()

If it's an OEM license officially it lives with the hardware it came supplied with, so if you sold the hardware on but kept the license you'd be breaking the EULA.
In practise you should be able to reinstall I think, but Microsoft may be a little apprehensive about activating it for you.
Well it never came with any hardware as I bought it off somebody else anyway so I guess I have always been breaking the EULA :O

Give it a try and see what happens. You have nothing to lose!

Microsoft OEM software is only meant to be supplied with hardware and can't be moved from machine to machine the same way that retail software can.
You can physically install it on a new machine but that is against the EULA and rather naughty. Microsoft has been clamping down on activations so that once an OEM copy of a piece of software has been installed somewhere they will only let you activate it over the internet once, after that you've got to phone up to activate. People have been going into places like PC World and copying the serial number off the stickers on computers and Microsoft got a little bit unhappy about it all.
In any case, you may have to phone up Microsoft to activate the software and they won't give you the activation code if you tell them that you're installing the software on a new machine, in fact, if you'd upgraded the motherboard they won't let you re-activate on the original PC because if you change the motherboard its a _whole_ different computer according to M$.
The only way the nice people on the phone will let you activate is if you are reinstalling on the original computer that the software was installed on. The ID you give them is based on the hardware in the computer and if you upgrade your original computer that can make the original computer's hardware ID change![]()
So it is highly unlikely to work then? Oh well I will give it a try first before dismissing it all together.
