a friend of mine had got a new hard drive, and he want me to ghost or copy the old drive to the new drive, is there any free program or cheep shareware programs like norton ghost ??
not free, but not that expensive: Achronis True Image
I got it in PCWorld in a pack with Disk Director. Can't remember how much it is, but both apps seem very good.
I couldn't find anything that was free, easy to use and had the features i wanted at the time.

I've used Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0 a few times and found it hassle free. It's not free but there is a trial download available. You can get it here http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing...s/migrateeasy/
Paragon anyone... http://www.paragon-gmbh.com/ seem to remember using it on a WinPE CD and finding it worked a treat...
AMD X2 @ 2.6Ghz, X1800XL @ 540/600
if you want free you can do it with xcopy, i used to use a win98 boot disk with xcopy and boot the pc with both hdd and copy everything from one to the other, I can't remember having to do anything else, though I heard someone saying how to do it and it involved creating a few files that couldn't be copied?. I am sure you will find instructions for doing it if you google for it. Thats how I always did it but with an impending upgrade coming I downloaded acronis disk copy or truimage or whatever and will be giving it a go..

Win98 boot disk doesn't work too well with NTFS partitions, though .
forgot all about that, told you it was a while since I had used it and it would have been win9.x;-)
wonder if that was why I downloaded the acronis prog..

I'd suggest Drive Snapshot also - although not free, the trial download will do backups for a month and has no limits on restores. This makes it ideal for once-off backups or disk copies.Originally Posted by Elspuddy
Look for xxclone. Used it many times and works a treat.
I thought for a moment that you were referring to XXCopy which does a similar thing (copying disks at file level) by the same company, but which is better suited to Win9x/ME installs.Originally Posted by cwl999
However a look at their XXClone: Theory of Operation page does raise a couple of questions - how can it copy files locked by other applications if it runs as an application itself? (a quick look at their Technical Notes suggests that it does 2 reboots to pick up such files - a little inconvenient). And how can it handle data inconsistencies that occur when a program is changing files as they are being copied? (e.g. if a program is updating files A and B during a backup, how does XXClone ensure it gets the pre- or post-update versions consistently? If it copies a post-update A and a pre-update B then this can lead to problems).
Another thing to be aware of is that XXClone Pro does require Product Activation - if you purchase a copy and Pixelab ever goes out of business, you will never be able to reinstall it.
