RAID and Windows 2003 Server problems

    Hi all.

My system was running 2 160GB HD in a RAID Mirror setup. One of the drives died, and I could no longer get that drive, so I bought 2 new 250GB drives. I ghosted the orignal 160GB to the new 250GB and then built the array in the SATA Bios. However when the system boots I get a:

DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS RETURN.

I am fairly knowledged of RAID and have used this method before, albeit in Windows XP and Windows 2000 Server, Does anyone know why this is happening?

    Thanks for your time.

    Paul.

RAID controllers are not usually fussed about the drives being identical if you mirror them. What may have been a better plan ( and may stil be possible )would be to add one of the 250Gb drives in and rebuild the mirror, then swap the other 250Gb drive in and rebuild the mirror again. It'll take a while but you should have a systenm that was as before but with 90Gb of unused space which you can then partition as needed.

Is that the best way then? No way of getting this 250GB RAID running properly? Just double checking as it takes about 1 hour 20 to do the build.

    Thanks.

when you set the array up on the sata controller it wipes the disk - it doesn't just copy it.

In a single disk install it would have worked.

Let the array controller do the work

No, I had 2 160GB RAID1, one died, bought 2 new 250GB drives, Ghosted the working 160GB to a new 250GB and told the RAID Bios to create a new array and build (copy) the 250GB (ghosted) to the second drive, the build worked.

When I run the single 250GB windows boots up, but when I log in it immediatley logs back out to the logon prompt.

I get you - it doesn't usually work that way on the RAID controllers I'm used to.

When you run it as a single drive are you setting it on a different S-ATA channel ?

did you create the array to be bootable and is your BIOS set to boot from it ?
When arror message do you get when "it logs you straight back out"
have you attempted to boot in safe mode ?

I ghosted the 160GB to the 250GB and put the 250GB on to the channel the 160GB was on SATA Channel 1. Then added the 2nd 250GB onto Channel 2.

The array is marked as Bootable yes.

When I press return on the login box, the Windows Fan Fare tune plays, and then the shutting network dialog appears and then the logon box appears again.

Safe mode does exactly the same!!

Ok, I just set off Mirroring the 160GB to the Mirrored 250GB drive.

Are you saying once done, remove the 160GB and replace the 2nd 250GB drive and tell it to mirror from 1st 250GB (Channel 2) to the 2nd 250GB (Channel 1)?

And once thats done, would the extra 90GB appear unused in the Disk Managment MMC?

Thanks again for your help and time.

Nope, the new 250GB is only shown as a 160GB in windows

    What about:

Install 2 250GB Drives, create the mirror, reboot into Ghost, image the 160GB drive to the 250GB Mirror and reboot and cross fingers?

Yeah the Disk Management says 160GB drive.

I dont have the RAID software on, but I cannot see this util growing the partition or allowing the extra space to be used, as the RAID Bios built the Array from a 160GB array.

Image 160Gb to 250Gb, use some form of partition monkeying tool to expand it to a 250Gb then build the array?
