    Scheduled tasks for other users

We're experimenting with some software at work (WPKG) that will automatically install MSI files for all the computers on the network. We have this working fine however we're trying to get it running as a scheduled task that executes a BAT file, which automatically checks on bootup for any new packages to install and installs them.

The problem we're having is that we're scheduling the task to run as Administrator on the local computer but it doesnt seem to do it at all.

After looking around what ive noticed is that if your logged on the computer (say for example i am logged on as guest01) and try to schedule a simple task like loading calculator in 1 minutes time as the user administrator, it will load the calc.exe and put it in the processes list, however because I am not logged in as administrator at the time it will not display it on screen.

Is there a way that i can get windows scheduled tasks to run the program and make it show for guest01 even though its being told to run as administrator?

EDIT: Also ive noticed that on this BAT file, scheduled task will not run until you login as the user that the task has been scheduled for. I want the task to run as the Administrator no matter who has logged into the computer.

OK...I'm obviously missing something, but why don't you shove the MSI packages around using a GPO?

I've spoken with the person that's setting it all up server side and he's said that because they are running linux servers it wont allow MSI's to be pushed out using GPO.

Ah...yep, that'd do it, right enough. I assume that you've got Samba set up to emulate a windows domain - if so, the local administrator on each workstation won't have privileges to read from a network location. Can the job be scheduled to use a domain account with admin privs on the station in question and at least RX perms to the network location that's being checked?

Yeah we can schedule it to run as one of the network administrators accounts and it will work, however the machine will not run the BAT files to tell it to install the MSI until the network administrator that it has been scheduled for logs into the machine. So at the moment the scheduled task is kind of useless as the person its registered to has to login to every machine before it takes notice and installs the MSI.

TBH, I haven't used WPKG, but I note that it can be installed to run as a service as per HERE. Is installing it as a service and running the service under a domain account an option?

SMS is great. It also costs a BUNDLE to implement.

The "at" command uses the task scheduler service, which is the bit giving the grief to start with from the sound of it.

yeah i thought so, we use the "at" command at work on a server 2003 machine and it seems to work regardless of the user logged in?

Also, what about trying "gpedit.msc" to modify the local group policy of the actual machine and add the batch file as a startup script.

Sorry for not updating, been off for a few days. We've got the scheduled task working now, the machine its self was just playing up a bit, think it was just a dodgy Windows install.

It's now running the bat file exactly as it should on bootup. Thanks for the suggestions guys

If anyone wants to know more information on how we've put it into place then just let me know and i'll try and help you out.

Maybe it is working, but since it's not the current account, it doesn't display. Also, if your Administrator account has a blank password, it might not allow it. I've seen that before, though not with scheduled tasks.

Take a look in "properties" and make sure nothing is ticked that says something to the effect of "do not start if xxx" (like system is not idling or something).

Just a thought, but it appears that you are well on your way anyway

No it's working like it should now. Getting calculator to display was something we thought would be part of the problem but it isnt.

The scheduled task is meant to run a bat file, in which it communicates to the server that runs WPKG so it can install any new MSI files we have put in there for it to install.

We want it to run without displaying anything on screen which as a bonus the scheduled task automatically does.
