    Windows 2000.. possibly NT.

Linux is well known for running on very low end systems though, and you can do what you want easily using Linux.

    NT 4.0

linux runs like crap on low end hardware AS SOON as you want a WIMP system.

up until then its probably the best bet.

if it's gonna see the sunny side of the intarweb, be sure whatever you get is security-supported.

that means NOT 98, for all its charms

lunix, bsd, but surely you can spare a bob for some more ram simms must be cheap these days..

actualy, openbsd/netbsd both have a rather small memory footprint

NT or Windows 95 would be my suggestion... I managed to browse a few sites on my old 486 with '95

    (But definately get more memory...!)

there are linux distrobutions that can run on a 386 with a somwhat graphical environment.

quite frankly, i wouldnt go with an old version of windows because i would guess a few months after vista comes out M$ will drop support for 2k and NT

have you looked at damn small linux? that might be a good option

win 98 se or win 95. i'd go for the former myself - theres not much around on the net these days that attacks 98 boxes anyway. you might find websurfing really realy slow - but that said i did (once upon a time) have a 486 sx 75 laptop that i used for mirc, messenger and web browsing..

5lab: there are loads still out in the wild, the reason you dont hear them is because no one is really stupid enough to use win95 or 98 on the internet......

linux or BSD are really your only options.......

If you could get more ram for the thing you could probably run XP, just. Use something like nLite to remove some of the components such as WMP etc. Turn off all the visualisations and use the classic theme and you'd be surprised how well it runs.

I used that method on a dell (Laptop) CPI 266mhz with 128mb and it still runs great, mainly use it to remote other machines but is fine for browing and office.

If you can't get hold of any extra ram you could always try DSL Linux.

Strangely, the minimum CPU speed for Win2K is 233MHz. Microsoft ran a series of adverts in the trade press about 6 months before it was released, advising buyers to spec their systems to be ready for NT5 (as it was known at the time). Mind you, it think they also wanted at least 64Mb of ram.

If you are not confident with linux, I would go for Win2K. It is supported by Windows Update so it should be secure once it is patched, and provided you turn of the eye candy, it should run fine. If you can get some more ram from somewhere then even better.
