Exclamation Internet hanging by a thread!

Hey guys! Ok, I just reformatted my WHOLE computer... I had 2 partitions. One for my operating system, and one for all my other stuff. Well when I reformatted, I for some reason could only get to make it all one hard drive(not partitioned). Well I have updated everything, put all my software on from before, and now... I get the sloweeeesssttt internet!! BUT! it works fine for a LITTLE bit right after I defrag my computer. Whats wrong?

    Thanks!

Ummmmm lol.... Also, my overall computer speed has decreased about 50%. Do you guys think that A fried hard drive could be a result of this? I am asking this because, When I was reformatting, I accidently screwed up and Formatted and Reformatted and put windows on and took it off like 8 times each in about a 3 hour time period. It was a biggg accident.

Stop playing around with your hard disc m8. Woa, woa. Easy there. We are going to chill out and be a little bit scientific here. So. You want 1 partition (NTFS ?). With Xp pro on it ? From here what do you do ? Click straight on IE ? Or install your motherboards drivers from CD. windows, ALL windows default drivers suck.

That one partition thingy pissed me off when I migrated to xp. Get yourself a copy of partition magic. And run that. Backup files before using it. But it really gives u control over partitions. u can even re-size existing ones. Bonus.

Then... A little more detail on how you connect to the internet is best.

P.s. Stop defragging after a clean install. I believe it is just a time wasting exercise at this point. As u're hdd won't have had time to get fragged in the first place.

Actually.... 50% slower.. Is that a guess-t-mate or what ?
Coming to think of it. Have you got anti-virus software running at all. Or the Xp service and critical patches ?

This could be some kind of virus. I suggest a good root around in list of running processes. This would explain Pc running slow, and the net connection. As Worms etc tend to make net connections to some remote pc.

Thats how I found the little bugger on my pc. It sneaked on in the time it took me to install my Anti-virus software. Net connection was slow... Opened up a cmd promt and typed "netstat". Something was opening an ftp connection from my pc ! sure as hell was not me.

Here's a tool to remove that virus you have, and instructions to do it.

    http://securityresponse.symantec.com...oval.tool.html

Seems like it's a real nasty virus to contend with, i'd definetly run the program in safe mode to be safe..

    Good luck m8..

Make sure you turn off system restore before you run that tool. If you don't windows will kindly restore the infected files over the clean ones.

Welchia is a blaster variant so make sure you install all the relevant patches once you've removed the infection
