New WinXPx64 update breaks Daemon Tools 4.03x64

Be wary if you use Windows XP x64 Edition because installing the Windows XP x64 Edition (KB914784) update won't let you initialise DAEMON Tools 4.0.3 X64 on startup.

That happened to me. Norton Ghost is my friend. Happy computer time again

Having said that, if you're in the same spot I was then uninstalling that particular update can be done safely, my friend doesn't use Ghost, just uninstalled the update, ignored the message about it potentially breaking about another half-dozen updates and he's OK again. That thread is useful tho if you want to know more.

Something has also broken Itunes and Winamp

They work with a clean install and no Windows updates.

    Cheers,
    Stephen

KB914784 ("improved Kernel Patch Protection") will interfere with any software that needs to hook into Windows' kernel which also includes some security software (e.g. AppDefend). Sadly this just shows that MS patches need to be approached with as much caution as potential malware - "Windows Genuine Advantage" anyone?

Make friends with Norton Ghost. Or Acronis TrueImage if you're not a fan of Symantec products. Either provides you with a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card

The update should be removeable, allowing people aware of the problem to resolve it that way. However full system backups (Drive Snapshot and Acronis TrueImage being more capable than Ghost) and rollback utilities (Raxco's First Defense ISR) certainly do provide excellent fallbacks.

If you had already installed the update then just follow the instructions in the link below to remove it as it worked for me.
