Different serials with a copy of XP

Is there anyway of taking my copy of windows xp and changing it so it will accept a different serial.

I need this for system repairs which have no XP disk or recovery partition but have a XP license sticker on them.

The last i repaired a laptop it had the i386 file on the laptop but it did not have an other files so i copyed the other files and burned it to disk.

However authough it accepted the code during installation it would not activate with it it just said error authough i managed it over the phone fine.

Will it work if i install with my copy (and enter my code during setup cause normally it wont accept any other code) and then register it with that systems serial - can that be done??

    Thanks!!!!
