    File Server OS

    Hey All,

Iam currently researching a file server config and am after some advice on an operating system.

Some of the things i require:

-Ability to add files to the drives
    - Ability to map drives to load on login to networked machines

Any other features or things pepole would like to add please feel welcome.

    Cheers

FreeNAS is a FreeBSD based appliance which you configure with your web browser, I don't think it supports WinNT style domains, so you can't have the server force a CIFS (windows file sharing) share to map on windows login, but you can map a share by yourself, which will remount on each login as long as the share exists and your credintals are still valid.. that's the easy way of doing things. It even lets you setup software RAID and other file sharing protocols such as rsync, ftp, and nfs. linky.

Of course, if you want to do more with your file server you'll need a more general operating system, and there's so many different distros it's hard to solidly recommend one to you since that's more or less a choice for you to make.. OpenSuSE is probibly the easiest in terms of configuration, especially for servers, that might be a start to consider.

Them seem a good source for starters but i have no expertise wit hlinux whatso ever, linux is like flower arranging to me i have no idea how to do it or use it.

Maybe a windows sever build would be more suited, if their was something i could read indepth about opensues or FreeNas that helps new people like myself that would be great but otherwise i think the only option is Windows

You could try out FreeNAS on VMWare player (both free) so you can get used to it - it's pretty easy to configure without getting under the bonnet (so to speak) so I'd give it a whirl - you may be pleasantly surprised!

Well, windows servers aren't totally simple either, Active Directory requires knowledge of DNS, and Windows file sharing, and other Windows networking cravets.. Usually I use VMware to do test installs to see if I like operating systems.

Anyway, here's the FreeNAS Setup Guide in PDF. And OpenSuSE's wiki

windows has arbitrary limits on the number of simultaneous file sharing conenctions, based upon how much money you pay microsoft. whether these limits are a problem or not depends on your setup. samba (the server used on unixes like *bsd, linux or macos) doesn't have arbitrary limits
