    Emailing GIF/JPEG files

    Hey guys,

Where I'm working atm, we're having a huge push on marketing atm...
Now...our marketing manager corresponds with a graphics design company, and these people are emailing her logos/banners in GIF/JPEG formats.

The problem I face is that they're embedding themselves in the emails...and not displaying as attachments.

When you right click on the image, and "Save Picture As", you can only save it as a Bitmap format.

Now, this isn't exactly desirable from our PoV, so I'd like to be able to sort this out.

Is this a problem on our end, or theirs?

If it helps, I know they're running Apple Macs, while we're running Windows XP PCs with Outlook 2003 as our email client.

their problem i bet. might have changed, but i remember email on Macs was always a PITA.

How about you email a random gif or jpeg from a personal account to yourself at work to confirm. Or get them to send you a sample to a personal address to see what happens.

    Thanks for the reply Funkstar.
I knew there was something I forgot to mention...dog tired atm .
I have emailed our MM some JPEGs/GIFs from Outlook/Outlook Express/Webmail using different email accounts (albeit still with Windows )
They've all gone through fine (shown as attachments rather than embedded images)...which makes me believe it's a problem their side, but as they are a design company, with a fair few customers, I would imagine they knew what they were doing.

I've also received some emails from the design company, on work/personal accounts/clients and they've all been embedded.

With Outlook for instance, if you wanted to embed them, you can Insert>Picture>From File, whereas to attach them, just Insert>File...which changes the content header I believe?

I just wanted to make sure there was nothing that I could do at our end to correct this (changing the MIME settings etc...? clutching at straws here) to try and get some sort of solution sorted out.

nope, as you're recieving them like that. Do the images have to be embedded in the mail? why not zip them and send as an attachment?

I've suggested that Splash, but the idea wasn't received too well...it'll probably be a case of uploading them via FTP and accessing them that way, but it'd be nice to clear up the issue, for my own curiosities sake as much as anything else .

As long as there's nothing that I can do on my side, I'll settle for that though...I've tried...about all I can do I guess.

Thanks for the answers guys, if anybody else has got any wacky ideas, (I'm looking at you funny looking Apple guys over there ) please LMK in the meantime

Sounds like a problem with Outlook 2003 rather than anything else. It would be a client side thing, as if they are sending you things as gif/jpeg then as soon as it's sent it's your problem... it wouldn't of magically changed whilst sending. Try reading your email in a different client (if you can), and I'm pretty sure you will be able to choose other formats.

I could be wrong but I'm very confident.

bloody designers. it's their fault, always is

Asking a Mac user/designer to Zip a file is like telling your cat to go wash the dishes. it just doesn't compute. been there done that.

They will be embedding the image as opposed to attaching is as you said. probably because that is the way they were shown how to do it as design collage.

I used to work in a design studio, originally as a web designer. But i ended up doing all the finishing work for the two designers becasue they couldn't understand how to set things up for print because "it's different to how we were show at collage". i've never had any graphics training in my life, i just understand what the printing companies were asking for some reason. and i can quite happily work in pixels (web) and dpi (print).

that ended up in a bit of a rant. sorry about that

    Thanks Funkstar,

Pleased to have your input......Always nice to make sure I'm not going completely round the twist.

Forget the rant, god knows I'd like to sometimes
