    IPTABLES (red hat 9)

my router blew up so i havnt been able to do much with my linux box at home cos its just my dads windowz box on the net bt for when we get the router working i need to add an IP CHAIN to the IPTABLES so i can actually use the net. I have put it down to that cos when ever i try to activate the NIC it gets the address for the router and pings it but then says there is no response because the address isnt a chain in the IPTABLE.
How do i add a chain to the IPTABLE and could some one explain all of this to me cos im a linux newbie. I dont understand how this all works.
    Thank you very much

ahh, im no expert, but that would make sense as to why nothing is happening

For example, on my SME box, everything starts from the chain INPUT, which gets split into various other chains, which in the end gets accepted, denied or noted on the denylog.

when u get the router back, can you try access the internet after you done this as root?
    /etc/init.d/iptables stop
that stops the firewall (at least on my stock redhat 9 server) and lets everything thru. Otherwise try the command setup . its brings up a small menu where you can choose between different task. go for firewall and use customize and choose the ports you want open. A description for the services/port can be found in /etc/services

Is an excellent IPTABLES firewall script. You edit the top of the script to set up your network and then just execute the script. Really really good.
