    Dual booting XP / Linux

    Lo,

I am rebuilding my px over weekend, and wanted to try installing nix on my desktop. I already have a monitorless debian server. I wanted to know if Gentoo is a good linux desktop distrobution and for a raptor 74gb whats the best partitioning scheme for win32]/nix

distribution choice is entirely subjective. if you want to do everything by hand, and sit through pages & pages of compilation output before you have a usable system, then gentoo is appropriate. if you want a system that "just works", then something like ubuntu, fedora, suse or mandriva is more likely to please.

as for partition schemes, i live & die by the extended partition. something like this is what i tend to use:

    sda1, primary partition, NTFS, c:\
    sda5, logical partition, EXT2, /boot, about 50MB
sda6, logical partition, SWAP, about 1xRAM
    sda7, logical partition, Reiser3, /

I want a linux system to play with that will have a nice desktop enviroment. I know enough about nix to get myself around, but I want to develop a deeper understanding. It may sound trivial, but I want a nice looking work space, I have dual tft's so something futuristic spanning across both. I want a distro that will work with usb devices like, ipod. If you can recommend anything that would be great.

i think ubuntu is a pretty reasonable distribution for most users - to most intents & purposes, it's debian with a smarter installer (though i would strongly recommend using the "alternate" iso, not the standard desktop iso), so it'll do things like set up a basic X config for you - getting nvidia then twinview going isn't massively difficult from that point.

I already use debian, so ubuntu is just a nicer debian then ?

how much partition space would i need for it ?

couple of gig. depends on what you want to do. ut2004 alone is about 6 gig, if you had any plans on installing some games
