Partitioning External Drive?

Hey Guys,
I would like to partition an external hard-drive, so that I could put different content in each partition. For instance, one partition for photographs, one for school work etc. However, this drive will in the future be taken from its external enclosure and be connected via SATA in my PC, and not via USB as it is now. Could partitioning this drive therefore cause it to corrupt when I use it in the PC at a later date, or is partitioning of external drive ok? I'm unsure of whether connecting it via the enclosure's SATA -> USB would cause such problems, or indeed, if it differs to partitioning on a normal IDE/SATA drive which I do frequently.

Any advice/experience would be appreciated.

I wouldn't imagine that any corruption will occur, but having never done it I can't say for sure. But it is just a regular HDD in an enclusure that has an IDE=>USB converter, so there shouldn't be an issue.

Why will you be taking the drive out of the enclosure? How will you connect it to SATA?

Basically, this enclosure allows a SATA/II drive to be connected to via eSATA and USB. As it currently stands, I only have the latter, and no SATA connectivity in my PC whatsoever.

In the future, I hope to have such connectivity, and am therefore planning to take the drive out of the enclosure, and connect it directly to a motherboard as is usually done with such drives.
