Does anyone have any tips to help my get my hands on legitimate second hand software such as Windows XP and Photoshop?
I've been looking on ebay and to say the half of it is beyond dodgy looking is a major understatement.

luck of the draw on ebay.
have managed to get 2 boxed products, tho, from same:
Adobe Video Studio Pro - AE 6.5 Pro, PPro 1.5, Encore, PS CS1, Audition - came to 470 - BARGAIN
Recently got PS CS2, Illustrator CS2 and Indesign CS2 - 378 all in. Again a bargain. For a friend.
both have had license transferred without a hitch etc.
Recommend you go for a student licence, should be able to pickup following :-
Photoshop CS2 £200
XP Pro upgrade £65

That does cause a problem if you are not a student.
Fuddam, that second lot really is a bargain. I need to start looking out for these more.
Luckily I am a student so I have had a look down that avenue but I was hoping some second hand licenses might better cheaper, a bit cheeky perhaps?
If you are a student - http://www.studio8student.co.uk
Dreamweaver, Flash Professional, Fireworks, Contribute and FlashPaper for £75 inc vat! Bargin!
(BTW - I won one of the iPod shuffles on the front page)
