Windows Explorer Error on Windows Logon

Sister logged onto machine today and was presented with a dialog box saying:

"Windows Explorer has encountered and error and needs to close" blah blah blah..

I logged on and received the exact same error, the error also occurs when I boot in safe mode - the only thing that had changed on the machine since I last used it was that it rebooted after installing some Windows Updates.

Here's a link to the error and the event viewer bit about it: http://www.sendspace.com/file/how3jy - apologies for the huge filesize, I had to save it in paint because I can only run stuff from the run prompt via Sysinternals Process Explorer

    Any help very much appreciated

    What version of Windows?

When you get the error and OK it, does the task bar vanish too?

Does the message appear just once, on logon?

Have you got a HijackThis log we can look at?

Most common causes of Explorer crashes are 3rd party extensions - configure Dr Watson to produce crash dumps:

    Start / Run / drwtsn32

In the dialogue, the log path and crash dump path should be already be set - note these paths for future reference.

Set the Crash Dump Type to "Full".

In Options make sure you have at least the following items checked:
    - Dump all thread contexts
    - Create crash dump file

Log on to get a crash and check a dump is produced.

    Windows XP Pro SP2

The taskbar etc never appears, I click my username to logon enter password and around when the taskbar would load I get that error.

I haven't got a HijackThis log yet, but i'll download and run it and post it here.

I'll go log off and on again and post the crash dump here aswell.

EDIT: I get a .dmp file produced, and it's 28.8Mb in size - which seems a hell of a lot to me, but then I don't know much about Crash Dumps etc, I opened it in Notepad and a lot of it appears to be gibberish, so i'm not sure whats going on there.

    EDIT II: here's my HijackThis log;

    Code:

Can you zip and upload the dump file to that sendspace.com and PM me the URL?

I'll take a look in the debugger and see if I can see what happened.

Okay, I'm going to go with mismatched DLLs following a partial or failed hotfix application.

Start a cmd prompt, then run appwiz.cpl - check which hotfixes were installed before the problem started.

At the command prompt, enter this command:
    dir %systemroot%\$*.* /ah /od

This should list the uninstall folders where the hotfixes keep backups of the files replaced.

Check the size & datestamps on the files in the recent uninstall folders against the copies in %systemroot%\system32 - if some are identical then they weren't updated properly.
You can still "cd" into the uninstall folders even though they are hidden, and use "dir" to list the files.

I guess that AV or lack of disk space might have interrupted the process of replacing the files - shell32.dll, ole32.dll, comctl32.dll and explorer.exe are the ones to check.

(I'm more of a server & kernel debugging type of guy, so this is a little guesswork )

    Same deal with this DLL.
Unfortunately my main rig is out of action right now due to a blown PSU, so I can't fire up my virtual machine with XP SP2 to see what the versions ought to be... but it sounds like it would be a good idea to check through the $NtServicePackUninstall$ and Dllcache folders for these 2 files.

Re-applying SP2 should work, but would mean having to re-apply all post-SP2 hotfixes again so see if you can find previous copies of the files mentioned above, or use appwiz.cpl launched from a command prompt to uninstall all of the recent hotfixes.

I had a look in $NtServicePackUninstall$ for those 2 files, and the ones there are dated the same as what you've said above, i'll give reinstalling SP2 a bash because I don't really have time to try anything else, I've been getting hell because 'I' broke the machine

The files in that folder are the backups before before SP2 was installed, so something has regressed your Explorer.exe.

I would start by extracting Explorer.exe manually from SP2 and copy it over the one you have - way quicker than removing & reinstalling SP2 and then putting all the post-SP2 hotfixes on.

I think you can extract the files from SP2 to a temporary folder by using /x.

If that doesn't work I would try removing the hotfixes recently installed, which should restore the backed up versions of the replaced files and get you back to a working state.

Is there a way to find out how recent the hotfixes were installed?

I know that only 2 were installed today, but I can't remember the KB numbers and I can't find a way to find out the date they were installed via appwiz.cpl

    Cheers,
    David

The dates on the Hotfix uninstall folders.
If they were installed by Automatic Updates then I would expect the highest-numbered hotfixes to be the ones.

Did you try the "dir %systemroot%\$*.* /ah /od" command at a cmmand prompt?

I did, and I saw one entry for today, went to that folder and ran the wee executable there that uninstalled it - rebooted but it hasn't sorted it/changed anything.

Got lazy and reinstalled SP2 - Explorer loaded fine and sygate warned me it had changed since last time and reports it as version 6.0.2900.2180 which I assume is an xpsp2 version?

Version 6.0.2900.2180 would imply to me that Sygate is reporting on the version of Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe) and not Explorer (explorer.exe).

OS components follow the (NT) kernel version numbering scheme - so 5.0 for Windows 2000, 5.1 for XP, 5.2 for 2003 (and XP x64) and 6.0 will be Vista.

Internet Explorer has its own versioning scheme as it has been released cross-platform with a consistent version number.

    Glad you got it sorted
