Alternatively try www.yahoo.com - and reading your mail from there, as this works more often then the BT gateway.

Meanwhile, UK users of Yahoo! were without a number of services, including e-mail and instant messenger, on Sunday due to a power failure.

A spokesman told BBC News: "Yahoo! search, Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger were quickly restored to normal operation as were many of our content services."

Start by logging in to your mail at yahoo.co.uk. Towards the top right click 'options' and then 'POP Access and Forwarding'. Web & POP access should be selected and by clicking on 'POP settings' you shall have all the info to set up access in Thunderbird.

Open Thunderbird and select Tools -> Account settings. Click on Add new account and the rest should be straight forward.

Just the normal free yahoo mail.

    Incoming Mail Server (POP3): pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk POP Port = 110.
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk SMTP Port = 25.

By the way Yahoo requires a secure SMTP connection, so you will need to check the 2nd option in Thunderbird smtp settings 'use TLS if available'.
