After a recent re-installing of WinXP, my PCs performance is terrible.
It's fine when running programs, but it takes forever to do anything. It's just taken me 8 minutes to start up a MPEG-2 file in WMP. The computer didn't hang though, I spent the time reading posts here.
Other examples include taking around 5 mins to load IE or Firefox, 3 minutes to start X3: Reunion and by far the biggest offender is Windows Media Player, which takes anything from 2 to 20 minutes to start playing a vid.
This does not affect performance while you run things though. Videos play fine. IE and Firefox load pages at a decent speed (does struggle when you open new tabs sometimes). X3 runs beautifully. Football Manager runs quite well too.
As I say, this is after a recent re-install. The performance wasn't this bad with the previous 1 year old installation. I don't have any new and unusual background tasks (other than Creative X-Fi software, but the problems were occuring before I bought the X-Fi).
Can anyone advise on what I need to look at to sort this out, because it's really getting annoying now. Something must be delaying things in the background. I've run anti-spyware tools, and I'm getting some more to make sure I'm clean.
Please, someone help me!I don't want to re-install Windows all over again!
