    Unhappy Explorer Problems

    Hi,
I'm having trouble with Windows explorer, notably when i'm exploring folders it crashes frustratingly often - I get a "has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. Can I do a windows repair (if yes, how!) or do I need to reinstall windows entirely (and if so will this affect anything I have on my hard disks?) ??? i'm running XP by the way,
    thanks

Have a look in the Event Viewer to see if the system logs any problems that might give you a clue.

Would all the folders contain certain types of files? This can often happen with folders with videos.

    Start / Run - enter "drwtsn32"

Make sure "Create Crash Dump File" is selected, and "Crash Dump Type" is set to Full

Make a note of (or change) the Crash Dump path in the second box.

With these options set, when Explorer next crashes it will produce a .DMP file.
PM me when you have that and we'll see if we can figure out what is going on.

The most likely cause is a 3rd party Explorer extension with a bug - can you reproduce the problem 100% by navigating to a specific folder?

Yeah, all the folders contain video files. I'll try what you suggested Paul, but i'm not sure i'll be able to gett it to work - i'm ok with hardware (it's just like Lego with wires), but software and I don't get along so well!

Ive been having the exact same issue all week. I just managed to nail it down a bit.
    Taken from : http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:A...ient=firefox-a

    Windows worries
Q: Some .avi files cause a crash in explorer.exe
A: Start > Run > type regedit and press enter

    Navigate to:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

If there is an entry in there with the name DivX in it, delete it.

    Now navigate to:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler\
Delete the value (default). It will then appear as an empty value.

Close the registry editor and reboot your computer.

It stopped the crashing for me, but im still having issues encoding into DivX with some programs (namely TMPGEnc), with no video showing at all.
Strange how i was searching for ages and the above "fix" was the only one i could find on the entire of google

I have this problem aswell, and yes, its when i try to view the folder containing all my films. However, after the "has encountered a problem and needs to close" message for explorer, i get a 2nd for Doc Watson.

Ill keep an eye on this thread and see how it goes.

    cheers guys.

    Exactly the same here.
Have you installed the latest version of DivX by anychance ? - im wondering if this has caused it.

Note to what i posted above : I didnt have a DivX entry as i uninstalled it before trying, but i still removed the other key and it seems to have worked so far

    1) Open a command window (Start->Run, type in 'cmd' hit enter)
    2) To remove image preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
    3) To readd image preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
    4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
    5) To readd media preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 shmedia.dll

You won't be able to 'preview' divx\xvid files in a little window, but after having experienced this myself, I consider that not necessarily a bad thing. You will still be able to double click a file and have it start your chosen application and show the file, just like it used to do before microsoft decided to mess things up

Kinda old DLL there, and it's got a bug in it, so when that trips up it takes the owning process with it - explorer.exe.
Remove, patch or update that DLL to solve your problem.

when you say 'readd', what does that mean? Or is it just a typo for read?
Also, am I the only person to whom that long list of code meant nothing?
If I try what i've quoted above, is there any chance it'll cause a problem?
Sorry for all the q.s i'm no software expert!

No, it's a typo. It should have a hyphen in it 're-add'. What you are essentially doing is removing the 'image preview' window from windows explorer, so where as you once would click on an image or divx\xvid file and it would appear in a small window to the left of the window you are viewing it in, like shown here: http://www.spcug.org/reviews/blackart0101a.gif . This is the main cause of problems in windows XP, especially in conjunction with divx\xvid when the codecs don't operate correctly and also the main reason explorer crashes.

Or is it just a typo for read?

You are dissassociating the .dll files from windows. Here's an explanation of what a .dll file is: http://www.easydesksoftware.com/dll.htm all you will effectively be doing is telling windows to act in the 'classic' manner, when opening a window there is no reason for it to scan the folder in preperation of you clicking on a file, which it will then provide the small preview window for. If you wanted to look at a particular file, you would double click on it and it would open in its associated program.

The instructions are: Goto START (button on left side of screen in Windows) Press it, click 'Run' type in cmd press enter and type into the box after the command prompt from above 'regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll' (as your problem relates to windows previewing divx\xvid files, if your problem was viewing jpb\bmb or whatever image files, you would use the other command) press enter.

You can see here: http://www.tweakxp.com/article36849.aspx its a perfectly valid command to use to overcome the problem. Infact, if you copy each entry 'regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll' for instance and goto google.com and hit 'search' after doing so, you will see people all over the internet suggesting this method as a means of overcoming the same problem.

Alternatively, you could visit the dvix.com forums and ask them for the patch that solves this problem.

So its Xvid causing the problem and not DivX
Latest Xvid codec is 1.1 - its not been updated for a while now.
    http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

I think something new is causing the conflict though - its just too strange how 3 of us have the same issue at about the same time. My system has been running fine with Xvid for as long as I can remember.
Only things off the top of my head I can think of are new DivX install (6.2.5 - full registered legal version, not trial) and I recently did a full windows update via autopatcher.
