Anyone got an idea where exchange keeps a history of its logs. A customer who has made something for us (which is wrong) is denying getting the emails, so we're hoping to trace the logs from exchange and bust their ass.

you'll need to look in the message tracking centre ( if you have it switched on and havn't enabled circular logging )
however all it will show is that the email left your organisation , it wont show that it has nessesarily been received at the other end.

As Moby says, unless you had a read receipt and they acknowledged it all your logs will show is that the message left your relays.
Using email logs to try and prove anything like this is a waste of time, email is not a guaranteed delivery system (it would be better if people followed the RFCs but that's another matter entirely) and unless you have a reply from them acknowledging it you're buggered.
Its not ideal no. But it's going to help... trust meOriginally Posted by GDVS

That's why we use a separate archiving system here - GFI MailArchiver.
In old days running Exchange 5.5, I used to leave logging on for the outbound SMTP connector. I could then track mail being handed off to remote systems, so I could then prove the mail left us and was received by the customer's systems or their representatives, as we used direct DNS delivery and not a smart host or relay.
That only shows that it got to the recipents MX - if they went via messagelabs for example , it would only show the hand off to the ML tower.

Indeed, but if they employ messagelabs, they're the next responsible link in the chain.
Just thought I would clarify this - Moby is not talking about circular logging for the database logs - he is talking about circular logging for the message tracking logsOriginally Posted by Moby-Dick
Most of teh message tracking options are in the general tab of the properties for each server.

what resources does the Message Tracking facility use? What format are the logs and how big do they get?
We're only a small business so wont be thousands of incoming/outgoing a day.
The Message tracking logs are stored on a share on the server with the filenames yyyyddmm in Tab seperated values. (tsv as opposed to csv)Originally Posted by Vini
They contain a bit of info about the emails and the subject line. The space tehy use will depend on the volume of email you process.
The sharename is just servername.log
