people have been a bit stuck when needing a filesystem writable under both linux & windows - ntfs support has always been read-only on non-microsoft oses

aah! i didn't really get what you were meaning in your first post

hopefully some NAS devices will get a software update so they can handle NTFS external devices.

Unfortunitely FAT32 will stay with us for a long time yet, digital cameras, MP3 players, mobile phones all now need to ready 4gig memory cards so need FAT32 support.

if <insert favourate OS filesystem> is so good then why didn't people write a filesystem driver for NT and just use that then?

nah NTFS should of been more opened up, not just for competition but it would be nice to use it on ones digicam cards.

There are NT/2K/XP drivers for most of the *nix file systems...but these are beta drivers too

Have to admit I do like NTFS, both for the compression and security.

But yeah, wish it was a little more open

I started writing one for ADFS once.... after about 15 hours and far too many trashed partitions i gave up. Writing filesystem i/o isn't easy, well i found FAT32 easy, even crammed it on a PIC16 (because the 18s didn't have USB).

Filesytems are all well and good, but i think we should have almost a middle tear concept thats cross platform, WinFS god rest its sole, the concepts of such a filesystem should make it through one day, but it would be rather nifty if there was some abstraction. The dream of a SQL interface to files will one day happen..... one day.
