    picking a voip service...

I was thinking about signing up to a voip service such as skype or scantalk, or whatever else is out there, but I'm a little concerned I'll end up on one network not being able to contact people on another network. The natural leaning is therefore probably skype as that's what most people have heard about, but they're owned by ebay now...

what are the points to look for in a good service, and are there any services which you'd suggest I avoid or look at for some reason or another?

    ta

p.s. I will be looking to use this to call internationally as well as locally...

With these skype and other ones etc can someone form a landline or mobile call you?

I have the tesco one as i got it for nothing and you get a normal landline number,
which anyone can call with a normal non voip phone.

personally i'd just take a look at whichever SIP service gives the best rates - by using an open protocol like SIP, you're not forced into using particular software or hardware

I personally love draytel, they have excellent service and are a company related to draytek. Never let me down and cheap rates to other countries etc

We're using voipcheap at home - admittedly only with a PC itself - but the service is very good and stupidly cheap..

My setup is router->connection, phone->router. Its very posh having two numbers too, one 0870 one, and 0207 (i live in the northwest heh). You may need to pay extra for some features/numbers. Hell if someone leaves a message, it gets e-mailed to me

I was looking at http://www.voiptalk.org which seems to offer an 0871 incoming number free? ...an added bonus perhaps... anyone using talkscan?

I think I'll be signing up for DrayTel myself, to complement my new Draytek router

its called "enum" prob electronic number but im not to sure.

    find more here:

    http://www.e164.org/

prob be mainly used to assign DDI to an e-mail address to begin with ie phone thedude@website.co.uk, but you can also assign them to websites ie thedude.website.co.uk

www.sipgate.co.uk offer quite a good guide on how to set it up using a free sip application.
