hi, i really wanted to put all my DVD's onto a spare 250gb hdd, so its sort of like a film centre kind of thing, what programs can do this? i want the dvd movie only, and it to be the same quality as the DVD itself. this possible?

ok.

basically you need software to rip the data off the DVD. This will include removing the CSS, Macrovision and region encoding. Then to remove all the other features, video, audio, subtitles and menus you don't need is another step.

i dont kno what CSS (cascading style sheets?) macrovision or region encoding is... i kno region 2 is uk e.t.c
so i have got to copy everything off the disc to hdd then erm.... somehow get a divx? file and that is the movie?

i am really confused...i havent the sliteest where to start yeah... its a bit advanced for me that guide... sorry! if u have msn it would be much easier

just have a read up on the technologies mentioned in the site that funkstar has provided. Look at hexus DV Doctor which has some good threads on general DVD technology terminology.

Its better to have a basic understanding of what you want to do and ask specific questions rather than "I don't understand, whats this whats that" eg: you wanted DVD quality on a hard disk , yet you then ask whats DVD quality on a hard disk.

Have a read up on the baiscs, and then the sites provided will make much better sense, and you can then ask specific questions.

Use DVDShrink. It's the best for what you're after. You can remove all the extra (foreign) soundtracks and subtitles + DVD extras and leave just the main movie with the English 5.1 soundtrack.

You can compress the video to reduce the final filesize or leave it, as I do.

If you already have the HDD then I'd recommend the Freecom Network MediaPlayer. It's similar to the Freecom Mediaplayer 35, but you can buy it without a disk and put your own in which works out cheaper. It's also fanless, the non-network player isn't.

The network port also allows you to stream audio, video and photos from a UPnP client, e.g. your PC with Windows Media Connect installed.

The player is around £100 without a disk, I've had mine for almost a year. All my kids fav DVDs are ripped to the player as an ISO image using DVDShrink. It saves them having to find the original DVD when they want to play a movie and also saves the original DVDs from getting scratched.

thx u 2, i was 100% baffled 2 horus ago lol! i understand how to use dvdshrink, its just what do i do with the 2 Video_ts and Audio_ts folders on my HDD?

jackvdbuk, I think there are some players that can play DVD movies from an ISO image, think VLC Player is one of them.

I found using DVD Shrink to save the movie as and ISO was easier to manage all the ripped DVD files, and easier to select and play. Plus when you want to make a copy you just select the ISO image in Nero and burn.

hmmm it sounds like ill do this then i really wanted in a windows media playable format / divX player format to play but this looks like the enxt best thing

If you can't find a player that can play ISO DVD images (somone told me VLC can do this, never checked it myself) then just rip the DVD to video_ts style folders and use PowerDVD or WinDVD to play. Both of these players, and probably more, have an option to play DVD from hard disk. And you can create a playlist which will save you having to open navigate through a load of folder just to start a movie.

Or rip it to an ISO, and then use Daemon Tools or something to mount the ISOs on a virtual drive.

Your other alternative is to rip the DVD to an AVI file (which will be smaller and easier to manage in the end, but involves compression, so there will be quality loss (though whether it's noticable is up to the user). Dr DivX can do that (not used it for a couple of years though) as can FairUse Wizard 2.

just rip them and leave them in dvd format.

i suppose if you own them you can legally download them... but thats a bit hazy. And less fun!

I use AutoGK from Doom9.org, worked very well for me. The only disk i've had problems with is Finding Nemo becuase they do weird things with jump points etc. you get bonus footage mixed up in the rip. There are ways round this, just haven't got round to trying them yet.
